At the southern end of Zunzgen, Zunzger Büchel rises as a landmark with an archaeological history. Alongside this distinctive hill, a former tithe house, seasonal experiences at Wüest Farm and cycling routes through the Diegter Valley showcase different sides of the area. The view thus extends from a single historic landmark to the surrounding landscape.

Büchel: landmark and archaeological traces

Büchel, also known as Heidenbüchel, is an artificially raised, rounded mound about 30 metres high. An investigation uncovered parts of an early medieval castle complex there in 1950. As a landmark, the hill combines a clearly recognisable shape with an archaeological history reaching back to the area’s early days.

Büchel was built up in two phases and was probably inhabited from the 10th to the early 12th century. The construction phases describe how the mound was formed; the presumed settlement concerns its use. These are two distinct historical questions: how the hill was created and during which period it was probably inhabited.

Historic buildings and former functions

The former tithe house stands prominently on a rise in the upper part of the village at Hardstrasse 7/7a. It was probably built as early as the 16th or 17th century. The manor storehouse in Zunzgen was used to store the tithe and dues paid by Zunzgen’s citizens. The two historic aspects have different points of emphasis: for the tithe house, its location and estimated construction date are key; for the manor storehouse, its former storage function is. Together, the buildings offer different ways to explore local history.

Seasonal experiences at Wüest Farm

More than 40 Huacaya alpacas live at Wüest Farm on Zunzgerberg. Alpaca yoga is offered to visitors there in summer. In winter, they can take part in a fondue gathering among the alpacas; a date is planned for January 2027. Summer and winter thus offer different seasonal opportunities. Animal numbers, dates and availability may change. Check the latest dates before planning if you are arranging your trip specifically around one of these experiences.

Outdoor pool and landscape

In addition to its sunbathing lawn, Zunzgen outdoor pool has a table tennis table. The two features offer different ways to spend your leisure time: the lawn provides space to relax, while the table offers a specific opportunity to play.

Zunzgen lies south of Sissach in the Diegter Valley, on the banks of the Diegterbach, a tributary of the Ergolz. The municipality has a rural character and a thriving, active village life. Cycling routes around Zunzgen pass through the Diegter Valley and landscapes of plateaus, forests, meadows and orchards; elevated areas offer far-reaching views. The Diegterbach locates the municipality, while the cycling routes showcase the surrounding landscape. This gives you a clear distinction to consider when planning your trip: you can focus on the village itself or on the wider landscape as you cycle.
