Ormalingen combines a distinctive cultural heritage with a rural character in the Ergolz Valley. The church contains 14th-century wall paintings, while the local history collection presents changing exhibitions on the town’s history. For outdoor activities, there are walks and hikes, including the Ormalingen–Farnsburg route. This offers two different starting points for planning your stay: cultural history and a hike with a clearly stated distance and duration.

Ormalingen in the Ergolz Valley

Ormalingen lies in the Ergolz Valley, east of Gelterkinden, at an elevation of about 423 metres above sea level. The municipality’s landscape includes forests, meadows and the River Ergolz, providing good conditions for walks and hikes. Agriculture also continues to shape the town’s rural traditions. The landscape and agriculture thus offer two different perspectives on Ormalingen’s rural character.

One distinctive natural feature is the former vineyard at Hinterreben in the upper Ergolz Valley, at the foot of the Farnsberg. In 2023, it was enhanced as a habitat for slowworms. This adds a specific nature and species conservation aspect to the broader picture of the landscape.

Church and Local History

Ormalingen’s church stands on a hill southeast of the village, in the middle of a walled cemetery; the approach is steep. It contains 14th-century wall paintings. The church has been under cantonal protection since 1969 and is also protected at federal level. Its setting, medieval paintings and protected status make it a distinctive part of Ormalingen’s cultural heritage.

The Ormalingen local history collection is housed in the Bürgerhaus in the town centre and presents changing exhibitions on local history. It displays more than 1,000 objects, photographs and documents from Ormalingen’s past. The collection is open during special events or by request, so arrange your visit in advance. The church and collection offer different perspectives: the church represents sacred heritage, while the exhibitions focus on the town’s history.

Archaeological finds also point to different eras. These include a Roman villa and richly furnished early medieval graves. The settlement of Ormalingen was first mentioned in 1286. Together, these details trace a timeline from the Roman and early medieval past to the first recorded mention of the settlement.

Hike to Farnsburg

The Ormalingen–Farnsburg hike starts and ends in Ormalingen. It is 9.8 kilometres long and takes about three hours. The route is part of the “Excursion into the Past” tour series and leads to archaeological sites in the Basel region. Check trail conditions before setting out, as they may change.

Farnsburg Castle is an extensive castle complex. Its striking remains include the shield wall, towers, several buildings and the ring wall. There are also several fire pits at the ruins. The cultural themes offer a different focus from the hike: the church and local history collection are devoted to sacred heritage and local history, while the tour combines archaeological sites with a stated route distance and approximate duration. This can help you decide whether to make the hike the focus of your day or concentrate on local history.
