Buckten lies between two valley slopes at the foot of the Hauenstein, in the Homburg Valley along the so-called Hauenstein line. For a stay, Wisenberg and local customs offer two distinct focal points: views and hiking trails on the one hand, and a cultural life that has been maintained to the present day on the other. If you would like to combine landscapes and traditions, you can include these themes in your travel plans. Regional activities add further options, each with its own distinct character.

Wisenberg: Elevation and Panoramic Views

Wisenberg reaches 1,002 m above sea level and is the highest point in the Table Jura. From the observation tower on the mountain, the panoramic view extends to the Alps and the Black Forest. Its elevation and views make Wisenberg a clearly defined destination for anyone who wants to make a summit and views across the surrounding landscapes the focus of their travel plans. Well-maintained hiking trails lead to the summit. Hiking is therefore just as much a part of Wisenberg as the observation tower: one aspect is the path up, the other the panorama from the tower.

Customs with a Distinctive Format

The Eierleset in Buckten is an old spring custom that has been held in front of Buckten gymnasium since 1982. During the event, raw eggs are carried through obstacles in various games, with the aim of landing them as intact as possible in baskets filled with chaff. This sequence gives the custom its distinctive character: the focus is not only on the festival, but also on the skill involved in getting the eggs through the games and obstacles.

Another old local tradition is Noh-Uffert z'Buckte, which has been preserved to the present day. Historically, it was celebrated on the village square on the Sunday after Ascension Day. The modern social event is a separate part of the tradition: it is held every two years as a folk festival featuring dancing, shooting galleries and fairground attractions. If you are planning a visit around this festival, check the dates in advance.

Regional Activities and Timing

Guided goat treks are offered as part of Geissen-Wandern in Baselbiet and the upper Homburg Valley. Before the tour, there is a short introduction; participants then each choose a goat and get to know it. Tours usually last three hours, including a break along the way, and are offered all year round, even in winter when there is snow. This gives you a good sense of the time commitment involved. If this tour suits your trip, check the booking details separately.

Bike tours around Buckten pass through a landscape of the Jura Mountains' gentle hills, forests and river valleys. Unlike Wisenberg, a single summit destination, the focus here is on the scenery along the cycling routes. These themes offer different perspectives for planning: a distinctive high point with panoramic views, or a tour through a varied regional landscape.

The Wannenweid fire pit is located in a forest clearing and has two large tables with benches for around 20 people. Its approximate capacity and available facilities offer a useful guide if you are considering a spot for an outdoor group gathering.

Buckten and the History of the Pass

Buckten's former role at the foot of the Hauenstein Pass is part of the village's history. Extra horses were harnessed to wagons to cross the pass, and a road toll was also charged. This offers a different perspective on the area from the view from the observation tower: here, the focus is on the former importance of traffic over the pass, while there, it is on today's views of the Alps and the Black Forest. Together with Buckten's location in the Homburg Valley, this creates a picture in which geographical setting, past mobility and today's landscape experiences form distinct, clearly differentiated themes.
