Zofingen is a small medieval town at the end of the Wigger Valley. It lies in the far southwest of the canton of Aargau, near the border with the canton of Lucerne. The old town, Roman remains, art and outdoor destinations offer different ways to shape a stay. The town also has a notable location in terms of transport: Zofingen lies near the intersection of important north–south and west–east transport routes in Switzerland, as well as at the junction of the A1 and A2 motorways.

Old Town and Town History

Zofingen’s old town is considered one of the most beautiful and best-preserved in all of Switzerland. At its centre stands the town church and former collegiate church of St. Mauritius, Zofingen’s landmark. Its three-aisled layout has a basic design dating to the 11th century; the church tower is over 60 metres high. The church, tower and old town provide a visible framework for the town’s history, which extends beyond any single period.

In antiquity, Zofingen was a settlement of the Celtic Helvetii; later, the Romans built an estate there. In the 6th century, Alemanni settled in the area and established one of the oldest parishes in Aargau. In the 11th century, the Frohburg family founded a collegiate chapter. This sequence reveals several historical layers of the town, from the Celtic settlement and Roman period to its later ecclesiastical beginnings.

Roman Mosaics and Estate

In the municipality of Zofingen, restored mosaic floors are among the remains of a Roman estate dating from the first half of the 1st century AD. The estate’s manor house is over 100 metres long and is considered the largest manor house among the approximately 200 Roman estates in the canton of Aargau. The mosaic floors are freely accessible; check current access arrangements before your visit.

The mosaics bring Roman history to life through a tangible architectural feature. Comparing them with the manor house, which is over 100 metres long, broadens the view from the surviving floor to the scale of the estate. This destination therefore highlights both restored details and the size of the estate.

Heiternplatz and Outdoor Destinations

With its square of lime trees, Heiternplatz provides a setting for outdoor events and walks with views of the old town and the Alps. The lime-tree square was established as a parade ground in 1745. Its historical function and its present-day use as a venue for events and walks give the site two distinct but connected aspects.

Walking trails lead to Heiternplatz, Wildpark Zofingen, the nearby forest and the surrounding fields and meadows. The Zofingen fruit-variety garden is located on the «Reuten» around Heiternplatz: it covers about 9 hectares and has 800 standard fruit trees; the number of trees may change. So far, 441 different fruit varieties have been identified there, and cataloguing is ongoing.

Wildpark Zofingen is home to red deer, fallow deer, axis deer and sika deer, as well as wild boar, turkeys and chickens. The animal species may change. Zofingen Rose Garden offers another way to spend time outdoors: its lawn for relaxing and playing, along with its exercise and sculpture park, invites visitors to stroll and linger. The Detective Trail is suitable for strollers and has many rest stops along the way. Public barbecue areas are located near puzzle stations 12 and 13.

Art and Further Discoveries

Kunsthaus Zofingen presents four exhibitions of contemporary art each year. The programme ranges from painting, drawing, photography and sculpture to installations, new media works and performances. Alongside the town’s medieval history, a changing art programme offers another distinct focus.

On the third floor of Museum Zofingen, mammals and birds are displayed in so-called dioramas in a naturalistic setting. Visitors with strollers can also enjoy the stroller-friendly Detective Trail; the rest stops along the trail and the barbecue areas near puzzle stations 12 and 13 are different points to consider when planning your visit.

When planning your trip, you can choose a focus based on your interests: the old town and St. Mauritius offer historic urban spaces, the art museum features contemporary art, and the walking trails lead to outdoor destinations. If you are looking for a hotel in Zofingen, you can start by deciding which of these themes you want to shape your trip.
