Bottenwil lies in the upper Uerkental valley in the canton of Aargau, borders the canton of Lucerne and belongs to the Zofingen district. Its unspoilt rural character is reflected in the gently rolling hills and the many forest and hiking trails. The motorway access is at Holziken. Bottenwil is also connected by the Zofingen–Schöftland postbus route, which serves the municipalities along the way. Check the timetable to plan your specific journey.
Hiking Trails Through Hills and Forest
The municipality covers 510 hectares, of which 212 hectares are forested. The highest point is in Buechwald at 665 metres, and the lowest is by the Uerke at 470 metres. Together with the many forest and hiking trails, these landscape features shape the character of the area.
For planning a hike, the Hagart and Badi routes suit different time budgets. Hagart is about 6.14 kilometres long and takes approximately one hour and 55 minutes. The Badi hiking route is about 2.31 kilometres long and takes around 35 minutes. At around 35 minutes, Badi takes considerably less time than Hagart, at approximately one hour and 55 minutes. Conditions on the Hagart trail and its accessibility may change; check both before setting out.
Culture and Local History
The Fabrikli Bottenwil cultural association organises at least six cultural events a year at the Fabrikli. The association has held regular events there since 2007. If you would like to attend a particular event, check the event dates before your trip.
One historic landmark is the ruins of Bottenstein Castle. They lie south of Bottenwil, on a hill above the village, and are now within the territory of Zofingen. The castle was built in the 13th century; only the foundations remain. Bottenwil itself was founded as a hamlet no later than the 8th century by an Alemannic man named Boto.
The village cheese dairy is also part of local history: until it closed in spring 2001, it produced two wheels of Emmental cheese each day.
Seasonal Activities and Planning
Activities throughout the year depend on different conditions. When there is enough snow, the Graben ski lift offers skiing for young and old; before your trip, check whether snow conditions are sufficient. During the summer months, the Bottenwil Uerkheim swimming pool draws visitors from across the region to the valley. As it operates seasonally, check the opening season before visiting.
You can reserve the Eichige Stock forest lodge through the municipal office. Find out how to make a reservation before planning your stay. Bottenwil offers a range of activities: hikes with different time requirements, cultural events, a historic castle ruin and seasonal leisure options. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, first decide which of these activities matter for your stay; this will help you coordinate your travel dates and plans.
