Flachsee, Emaus Chapel and St. Martin’s Parish Church give a stay in Zufikon different points of focus: nature watching, sacred art and architectural history. The Habsburg Way also leads to Zufikon on its section between Bremgarten and Muri. Depending on your interests, you can make a nature reserve, a hike or historic sites the focus of your trip.

Nature at Flachsee

The Flachsee nature reserve is of national importance. It extends along the impounded section of the Reuss between Rottenschwil Bridge and Bremgarten-Zufikon and covers approximately 140 hectares. The landscape is varied: mudflats and shallow-water areas lie alongside slow-flowing water, natural shorelines with reed beds, marsh meadows, floodplain forests and gravel islands. These habitats provide a home for various waterbirds.

Activities at Flachsee include excursions and wildlife-watching facilities. This makes it possible to explore the area independently or as part of a guided nature experience. If you are planning an excursion, check the dates in advance; programmes and facilities may change.

A hiking section with a Reuss crossing

The Habsburg Way section from Bremgarten to Muri follows the Reuss riverside trail to Emaus Chapel in Zufikon, where it crosses the Reuss. The chapel is therefore a clear landmark along the route. Bremgarten railway station and Muri AG railway station are listed as rail stations for travelling to and from this section. Check the current timetable before planning your trip.

Chapels and church: art and history

Emaus Chapel lies at the lower municipal boundary of Zufikon, close to the forest above the banks of the Reuss. It is classified as an item of regional cultural heritage and is under full cantonal protection. Its interior is particularly striking: cycles of oil paintings on fir wood date from 1676/77. One of them depicts the life of Saint Anthony the Hermit. The chapel thus brings together a specific location on the banks of the Reuss and significant works of art from the 17th century.

Pilgrimage is also part of the history of Emaus Chapel. In 1516, a papal decree granted it special privileges as a place of pilgrimage. St. Martin’s Parish Church offers a different historical perspective: it was built between 1865 and 1868 and is likewise classified as an item of regional cultural heritage and under full cantonal protection.

Another trace of history can be found at Brügglihau/Dominiloch. There, the foundations of St. Nicholas Chapel, built in 1584, were uncovered and preserved in 1953. Together, Emaus Chapel, St. Martin’s and the chapel remains offer different ways to explore the area’s sacred architectural and artistic history.

Choose the focus of your stay

If you are looking for a holiday apartment for a stay in Zufikon, you can first decide what you would like to focus on: Flachsee and its waterbirds for nature watching, Emaus Chapel and St. Martin’s for sacred art and architectural history, or the Habsburg Way for a hiking section that crosses the Reuss. The railway stations mentioned above provide travel information for getting to and from the section. If an excursion is part of your plans, check its dates in advance.
