Oberlunkhofen lies in the Reuss Valley, in the canton of Aargau and the district of Bremgarten. Several historical perspectives invite you to discover the village: visible Roman ruins, a church with a history dating back to the Middle Ages, and the remains of a castle between Ober- and Unterlunkhofen. Protected habitats and geological features are also part of the picture. You can shape your stay around the topics that interest you most.

Roman ruins in Schalchmatthau

In ancient times, a Roman estate with a bathhouse stood near Oberlunkhofen; its ruins are still visible today. The estate is freely accessible at all times. Check local visitor information before your trip if you would like to plan your visit.

A Roman villa in Schalchmatthau covered an area 40 metres long and 26 metres wide, with 26 rooms. These dimensions and the number of rooms give the archaeological site a tangible scale: this is a sprawling complex, not just a few isolated wall remains. Near Schalchmatthau, above Oberlunkhofen, the Freiämterweg makes a short detour to the ruins of a partially excavated Roman estate. If you plan to take this route, check trail conditions before setting out.

Church and castle: two chapters in the village's history

The history of the Catholic parish church of St. Leodegar dates back at least to 1185. Later alterations and furnishings also shape its recorded history: in 1685, Muri Abbey renovated the choir and had four new Baroque altars installed, including a new high altar. The paintings in the church are by J. Heimgartner and date from 1924. The different dates mark distinct stages, from the medieval origins to the artistic work of the 20th century.

Only a few preserved wall remains of Lunkhofen Castle are visible; they may have belonged to a tower or a residential wing. The castle was the ancestral seat of a knightly family of the same name, mentioned from 1166 onwards. It stands at the end of Rebenweg (MĂĽhlegg), between Ober- and Unterlunkhofen. From there, you can enjoy wide-ranging views of the Reuss Valley. This site thus combines scant architectural traces with a broader view of the landscape.

Protected areas and geological features

The landscape is also marked by designated protected areas. The Still Rüss–Rickenbach floodplain, a site of national importance, includes Oberlunkhofen. The municipality also includes Friedgraben, a site of national importance for amphibian spawning. The two designations refer to different protected areas and can therefore be considered as distinct aspects of the nature surrounding the village.

In Althau, erratic boulders are listed and protected as geotopes. The area also contains erratic boulders, also known as glacial erratics, as well as menhirs—that is, standing stones or megaliths. The granite stones come from the Urseren Valley. Their geological classification, protected status and origin give these stones a different kind of history from the Roman and medieval traces in the village.

A village in transition

Until well into the 20th century, Oberlunkhofen retained the character of a modest farming village. At the same time, its proximity to the city of Zurich encouraged extensive building activity and the growth of the municipality. This historical context helps put the village's development into perspective without equating today's places to visit with ways of life in the past.

Winegrowing is also part of the village's history: it was very important in Oberlunkhofen in the 19th century, but has disappeared completely since 1950. Together with the Roman complex, the parish church and the castle, it contributes to a picture spanning different periods. For choosing a place to stay, Oberlunkhofen offers points of interest primarily for those interested in local history, archaeological traces and protected landscapes.
