Berikon lies immediately south of the Mutschellen Pass summit, on the border with the Canton of Zurich. You can discover the town from two specific perspectives: the Beriker Cultural Trail makes old buildings, fountains and wayside crosses accessible to visitors; the geopark above Berikon showcases rocks as evidence of geological history. This lets you focus your stay on either local history or geology.

The Beriker Cultural Trail

Each object along the cultural trail has an information board and a QR code linking to a detailed description. The stops include the Hunting Museum at Schulstrasse 11, the artillery bunker on Marrengasse and the Berikon-West artillery position in the Näsple (Gunzenbühl) woodland. Together, the information board and more detailed description help visitors find their way around the individual objects, without limiting the visit to just one type of attraction.

Historic Buildings and Heritage

The timber-framed house was built in 1794 in the style of Zurich winegrowers’ houses. From 1809 to 1819, it housed the village’s first inn. Bürgisserhus already existed in the 18th century and served as a home and place of business for two families. One half housed Berikon’s first blacksmith’s forge. The house was inaugurated in August 2005 with a celebration of great cultural diversity.

The plague cross was made of shell limestone in 1628 to commemorate the great plague epidemic. Sculpted angel heads, along with depictions of the sun and moon, a flowering branch, a grapevine and rosettes, define its design. The monument thus links a precisely dated event in local history with a wealth of sculptural detail.

Play, Exercise and Outdoor Meals

The Riedacher recreational facility (FRIEDA) has a large playground with swings, slides and climbing frames. It also offers barbecue areas for outdoor meals, as well as opportunities to play football and volleyball. The facility brings together play and sports activities, with space to eat outdoors. As facilities and activities may change, check what is currently available before your visit.

Geopark and Hiking

Berikon Geopark is located at a viewpoint above the town. Granite, limestone, gneisses and sandstone steles showcase evidence of geological history. Visitors interested in landscapes and rocks will find a different focus here than among the historic buildings and objects on the cultural trail.

Hiking enthusiasts also have several specific points of interest: the eastern route complements the six stages of the Freiamt Nature and Culture Hiking Trail. The old village fountain, made of shell limestone, dates back to 1851 and lies directly on a hiking trail. These two details describe different connections to hiking: a complementary route on the one hand, and a landmark along a trail on the other.

Cultural History and Getting Around

The cultural group plans an annual programme of cultural events featuring words, images and sound. The Berikon theatre group was formed in 2003 as part of the 850 Johr Berike festival, staging an open-air play. There is evidence of Neolithic settlement; around the middle of the 12th century, the town was mentioned in documents several times under the names Percheim and Bercheim. Local history thus spans the earliest signs of settlement through to more recent cultural initiatives.
