Muhen lies on the eastern edge of the lower Suhrental, on the north-western slope of the ridge between the Suhre and Wynental valleys. The Suhre flows through the village from south to north; the surrounding plain is completely flat. The history of the village districts is also part of the landscape: Untermuhen, Mittelmuhen and Obermuhen were once separate and lie on alluvial fans at the mouths of deeply cut valleys.

Discover Craftsmanship and Architectural History

At the Muhen Thatched-Roof House, the craft of thatching is the main focus. The exhibition is complemented by collection holdings and objects from other trades, including carpentry, rope-making and blacksmithing. The house is also a particularly worthwhile stop on the north–south route through the Suhrental.

There are set opening times for visits: From April to October, the Thatched-Roof House is open on the first and third Sunday of each month from 14:00 to 17:00. Visits at other times are possible by arrangement. Check the opening hours before travelling if you are planning a museum visit. The Jazz Matinée is a regular fixture in the cultural calendar and takes place in front of the Thatched-Roof House on the Sunday of International Museum Day. If you are travelling for it, check the date for your travel year.

Another prominent cultural site is the Reformed Church of Muhen. Its polygonal church hall, attached parish hall and freestanding square bell tower are grouped around a church square on the slope. The complex shapes the village’s appearance, and most of its furnishings have been preserved in their original state. Depending on the light, the striking choir window may sparkle even from outside.

The political history can also be told in clear stages. In the Middle Ages, Muhen initially lay within the domain of the Counts of Lenzburg and, from 1173, that of the Counts of Kyburg. After their line died out, the Habsburgs took over territorial rule in 1273; around 1350, the Muhen district was established as a separate judicial district. After the Confederates conquered Aargau in 1415, Muhen belonged to the subject territory of the city of Bern, the Bernese Aargau. Since the founding of the Helvetic Republic in 1798, Muhen has belonged to the canton of Aargau.

Getting Around on Foot and by Bike

One specific hike leads from Schöftland over the Böhler Pass to Muhen. The route is eight kilometres long, takes 2 hours 30 minutes and is rated easy. The final section follows a forest path to Muhen Church. From there, it is just under five minutes on foot along a paved road to Muhen railway station.

For a walk, the municipality recommends the Müheler Forest. A cycling tour along the streams offers the chance to explore the Müheler valleys. Those looking for a signposted route can follow the north–south route through the Suhrental, which runs from Oberentfelden via Muhen to Schöftland. The route follows the Suhre upstream.

Getting There and Planning

Muhen has a rail connection to Aarau or Schöftland. Check with the operator which services are suitable for the day of your visit. For travel by car, there is a connection to the A1 motorway towards Zürich–Bern outside the village of Muhen.

The cultural programme, hike and cycling tour offer different ways to spend your time here. If the Thatched-Roof House or Jazz Matinée is part of your plans, time your trip around the relevant visiting hours or event date. The hike’s distance, walking time and difficulty provide a clear guide; the cycling route connects Muhen with the places mentioned in the Suhrental.
