Gränichen lies in the Wynental valley and combines striking landscapes with a rich local history. Liebegg Castle, sandstone caves, a museum and various trails offer different ways to spend your stay: from exploring a historic building to learning about village life in the past and enjoying nature on foot or by mountain bike.
Liebegg Castle and the Sandstone Caves
Liebegg Castle stands on a wooded hilltop in Gränichen. The architectural heritage includes the late Gothic Luternau House near Liebegg Castle. Augustin von Luthernau had it built in the mid-16th century. The castle and Luternau House provide a tangible link to local history, while the surrounding landscape offers more to discover.
The sandstone caves lie in a forest hollow near Liebegg Castle, with a small stream flowing through it. Sand was quarried here in the 19th century and used to build houses, churches and Liebegg Castle. The caves thus connect a distinctive landscape feature with the area's architectural history. They are also a popular destination for family outings and picnics. Cultural events are held in the area around Liebegg Castle throughout the year.
Museum and Village History
On the top floor of the Chornhuus Museum, the “Village Life in the Past” exhibition presents numerous objects related to agriculture, household life and crafts. It offers a glimpse into various aspects of everyday life in earlier times. The museum is open on the last Sunday of every month from 2 to 5 p.m., except in July and December. If you plan to visit the exhibition, take these opening days into account and check the date before setting out.
Another trace of history can be found in Gränichen Church: parts of the original wall paintings were uncovered during renovation work. Together with the late Gothic Luternau House and the use of sandstone, this discovery reveals different aspects of local history, which are not all concentrated around a single attraction.
Circular Trails and Nature Themes
The Schulthess Nature Trail is a circular route from Schürberg to Refental, with an optional extension to Liebegg. The full loop from Liebegg and back is about five kilometres long and suitable for strollers. Possible starting points include Bleien/Liebegg railway station and the Liebegg car park. You can also start the route by bike, for example from the car park below Schulthess. Another option for heading towards the castle is the Castle Hike. It starts at Gränichen railway station and leads towards Liebegg Castle.
For a shorter circular route, the Fuden Forest Nature Trail offers a different focus: over about two kilometres, native trees and shrubs are the subject of a learning and discovery tour in the open air. Along the circular route, 60 species are identified with signs. The two nature trails can therefore be distinguished by their respective themes and stated lengths: at Fuden, the marked species; on the Schulthess Nature Trail, the route towards Refental, with an optional extension to Liebegg.
The bike skills trail caters to a different interest. It is a Vita course ridden by mountain bike, with natural and artificial obstacles located mostly in the forest. The facility is open to the public and can be used free of charge at your own risk. Alongside walking trails, this offers an activity specifically described for mountain biking, with clear conditions for use.
The Wyna, Hills and Nature-Rich Places
Over its final stretch, the Wyna flows for about five kilometres through Gränichen, first north and then northwest. The valley floor has only a gentle gradient. By contrast, steep hills rise on both sides of the valley, deeply cut by side valleys and featuring small high plateaus. This contrast defines the landscape: a gentle gradient on the valley floor and much steeper slopes shaped by ravines on either side.
A section of the Wyna in the Pfendelmatte area, preserved in a natural state, is part of the decentralized Aargau Floodplain Protection Park. The nature-oriented cemetery grounds offer another way to explore nature: five locations provide information about local wildlife and the small-scale habitats created to support it. A respectful visit offers a chance to experience how people and nature live side by side.
