Muri Abbey Church brings together Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque elements. Its octagonal interior is the largest central-plan dome church in Switzerland—a form of architecture in which the central space shapes the building. Muri lies on the Lindenberg in the rural Freiamt region of the Swiss Plateau and is the district capital of the district of the same name. For almost 1,000 years, the town has been closely associated with its Benedictine monastery; the former monastery is considered a place of living cultural history.

Abbey Church, Cloister and Museums

The cloister also tells the story of different eras: almost all of its famous stained-glass windows were made in Zurich workshops in the 16th century. If you would like to learn more about the monastery complex, you can arrange a private or public tour with Murikultur. Tours are offered throughout the year, sometimes also in English, French and Italian. Check the current schedule if you would like to join a tour.

The Muri Monastery Museum displays sacred objects such as monstrances, chalices and donor panels. It also presents stories from the lives of the abbots, monks and Habsburgs. The Caspar Wolf Museum focuses on oil paintings, gouaches, drawings and prints by the painter, who was born in Muri. In addition to a permanent exhibition, it hosts changing cabinet exhibitions about Wolf, his art and his era.

The Singisen Forum offers a different focus, with changing exhibitions by contemporary artists from the region. The forum also provides space for art and cultural education, as well as interdisciplinary projects. The historic Singisen wing is also home to the Museum of Medical History Books Muri. Its permanent exhibition presents important works from the Early Modern period; public and group tours explore historic books and medical science.

Art, Books and Everyday Life in the Freiamt

Muri’s museum scene extends beyond the history of the monastery. The Museum Between Plough and Grain illustrates how rural life in the Freiamt has changed over the past 100 years. Its exhibits include machinery and tools, along with the stories behind them. Muri therefore offers a range of perspectives: sacred objects and monastic history, the art of Caspar Wolf, medical books and everyday life in a rural region.

Muri Info is the central point of contact for cultural and tourist information about Muri and the Freiamt. It also arranges tours of the monastery and monastery museums. The Kultur Kafi also serves as a visitor centre, where you can buy concert tickets and find out about cultural life in Muri and beyond. Visitor services and schedules may change; check them in advance if you want to plan your stay around them.

Trails Between the Plain and Lindenberg

Muri’s hiking area includes quiet country lanes across the plain that climb towards the heights of Lindenberg. A hike from Muri Monastery leads through the typical moraine landscape of the Freiamt to the Stille Reuss, a biotope of national importance. To explore more of the region, Muri is one of the possible starting points for the Freiamt Trail. This nature and culture hiking trail is over 117 kilometres long and leads through the natural landscapes of the Freiamt and past the region’s cultural heritage.

In Murimoos, a 3.5-kilometre circular trail has 18 information panels. At the revitalised Bünz, the Murimoos water playground gives children the chance to experience the river up close. For a cycling tour, SwitzerlandMobility’s listed cycle route 84 is another option; it runs between Muri AG and Zurich. Muri AG railway station has 206 covered bicycle parking spaces. Check the latest route and station facility information before planning your trip.

Muri’s outdoor swimming pool also offers specific leisure activities, including solar-heated pools and a 96-metre water slide. As facilities may change, check the latest information about the pool before visiting.

Seasonal Experiences and Local Customs

Some experiences are seasonal. From March to October, the flower fields at Klosterhof in the Muri region are open to the public, where you can pick seasonal flowers yourself. In Klosterhof’s pick-your-own garden, visitors harvest their own vegetables and herbs and prepare them themselves. This activity is seasonal. Check whether the flower fields are currently available before setting off.

Recurring local customs include Carnival: during the festive season, the municipal council hands over the keys of power to three Carnival associations each year. The turnip lantern procession for kindergarten children and pupils in the first and second grades takes place every year in early November. At the end of November, children and adults can visit St Nicholas and his Schmutzlis on three evenings at the festively decorated Maiholz forest hut.

The annual markets also mark the passing of the year. The May Market is Muri’s second annual market and takes place on the first Saturday of the month. The Martinmas Market on 11 November is Muri’s oldest annual market. Event dates may shift slightly; check the latest information before your visit. Depending on the time of year, you can discover Muri from different perspectives: through monastic culture and museums, along trails through the Freiamt or in time with its recurring customs.
