The town of Lenzburg as a cultural base

Lenzburg Castle tells a story spanning around a thousand years. Its residential museum, other exhibitions and historic gardens showcase ways of life from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. For families, the children's museum offers play, dress-up and craft activities with a medieval theme. Set aside a dedicated part of the day for a visit to the castle, rather than treating it as a casual stop between two more distant places.

Near the old town, the Burghalde Museum is housed in a historic complex of buildings with a park and playground. The Icon Museum is located in the basement. The Stapferhaus, right next to Lenzburg railway station, explores contemporary issues in its exhibitions. These are different kinds of attractions: you can divide your time in town according to whether you prefer history, family activities or contemporary themes. The old town itself has a horseshoe-shaped layout, with Rathausgasse as its main axis. Markets there offer, among other things, fruit, vegetables, eggs, fish and baked goods directly from producers; check the current date for a specific market day.

Walks and further discoveries

The City and Castle of Lenzburg Garden Trail is designed as a circular route, connecting stops such as Burghalde, MĂĽllerhaus, the town church and the castle grounds. Another interactive route, around two kilometres long, takes the form of a marble run from Gofersberg via the castle area to the old town and the Burghalde Museum. Both routes are suitable if you want your town visit to include more than indoor attractions. Lindfeld is also home to an almost completely preserved Roman theatre, freely accessible to visitors.

For another viewpoint, the Esterliturm tower is an option. Its viewing platform is reached by climbing 253 steps; from there, the view extends across the Seetal valley and Aargau, and further on a clear day. There are fire pits and hiking trails around the tower on Lenzburger Berg. However, the steps and location make this a different excursion from a level walk around the old town. So choose a base that suits your mobility, travel time and the routes you actually plan to take.
