Åskloster combines a long monastic history with a later historic building ensemble. At the mouth of the Viskan, golf and kayaking add further attractions; the Årnäshalvön nature reserve represents the old coastal heath. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Åskloster, you can weigh these different themes when deciding what you want your trip to focus on.

Monastic history and Åskloster Royal Estate

The ruins of Halland’s first monastery are located on Åskloster Royal Estate. Cistercians founded it in the 1190s. At the height of its development, around the year 1200, the estate of Ås Monastery comprised about 250 farms in northern Halland. This approximate figure gives an idea of the extent of the monastery’s property at the time; it provides historical context, while the ruins at the site show the archaeological side of its history.

Excavated remains of Ås Monastery and its church lie in front of the main building. The present main building at Åskloster Royal Estate is much newer: it was built of stone in 1806–1807, based on Carl Hårleman’s model designs for royal estates. The west wing was built in 1847, and the east wing in the 1860s. Åskloster Royal Estate has been a listed building since 1993.

Different historical periods are therefore represented side by side here: the monastery’s foundation in the 1190s, excavated monastery and church remains, and a main building and wings dating from the 19th century. Those interested in history will find both an archaeological story and an architectural history with several clearly dated phases in Åskloster.

Golf and kayaking at the mouth of the Viskan

The Klosterfjordens Golf Club course has a seaside character where the Viskan flows into the sea. It has nine holes with 18 alternative tee positions. These are two specific points to bear in mind when planning your trip: the course’s described character and its layout with alternative tees.

A 2–2.5-hour kayaking route runs from Kullagården, outside Veddige, to the sea. There, the Viskan flows into Klosterfjorden north of Åskloster. The stated duration helps you plan this tour as a separate activity. Kayaks, life jackets, paddles and spray decks are included in the price for the kayaking route from Kullagården to the sea; confirm availability before your trip.

There is also a Kayakomat at the mouth of the Viskan, north of Åskloster. Check its current status before you arrive. This lets you distinguish this offering from the kayaking route described above, without treating them as one and the same.

Coastal landscape as another highlight

The Årnäshalvön nature reserve in Åskloster is a remnant of the old coastal heathland. It adds a landscape perspective to the themes of monastic history and water sports. Check the current visitor information before your visit. When deciding whether Åskloster is a good fit for your trip, you can choose from a range of interests: archaeological remains and historic building phases, a golf course, a kayaking route with a stated duration, and coastal heathland.
