Varberg brings together fortress history, culture, coastal paths and nature. When planning your trip, you can focus on different things: historic sites, art and theatre, bathing experiences or birdlife. Kulturhuset Komedianten is centrally located in Varberg, just a few steps from the train and bus stations. This gives train and bus travellers a clear point of reference in the city; the other themes offer different ways to shape your stay.
Fortress, museum and bathhouse
Varbergs Fästning is a landmark offering splendid views and a history spanning several centuries. Its history includes the power struggles of the 14th century, wars, the construction of the fortress in the 17th century and a period as a prison in the 19th century. At Hallands kulturhistoriska museum, the Bocksten Man is displayed with his skeleton, intact clothing and oak stake. The two cultural sites offer different historical perspectives: the fortress spans several eras, while the museum focuses on a specific find.
The same museum also features Borgen, a medieval-inspired play exhibition. So, as well as the Bocksten Man, a museum visit includes a playful exhibition format. If you are interested in medieval themes, you can consider this alongside the fortress’s long history and the museum’s exhibits.
Kallbadhuset offers another combination of history and use. The present-day bathhouse dates from 1903 and is the only surviving bathhouse on Sweden’s west coast. Visitors can swim in the sea there year-round and then enjoy a sauna overlooking the Kattegat. Alongside the historic building, it offers a bathing and sauna experience that is clearly distinct from the cultural history attractions.
Art, theatre and cultural walks
Galleri Hamnmagasinet is an art centre with exhibitions throughout the year. From its base in Varberg, Teater Halland produces its own stage productions for audiences of all ages. Varbergs Teater hosts theatre, concerts, stand-up, dance and a variety of guest performances. The offerings have different focuses: Teater Halland is known for its own productions, while Varbergs Teater’s programme spans several performance formats.
Another option is the guided Skulpturrundan, a cultural walk taking in several works of art in Varberg. The options range from exhibitions and stage productions to a guided walk centred on several artworks. If you do not want to limit your cultural experiences to a single format, you can choose among these offerings based on your interests and the type of event.
Coastal paths and activities on the water
Strandpromenaden is an approximately five-kilometre coastal path between Varbergs Fästning and Apelviken beach. Apelviken has long stretches of sandy beach and offers windsurfing. The coastal path connects two named points, while the beach offers both coastal scenery and a water sport activity.
The Ă…kullaleden is a different route in both scale and focus: this approximately 25-kilometre cycling route starts in the town of Varberg and runs partly along an old railway embankment to the nature-rich Ă…kulla beech forests. Compared with the roughly five-kilometre coastal route, it is considerably longer and is described as a cycling route; it also leads into the beech forests. These details give you a clear comparison between a shorter link connecting the fortress and beach, and a longer route with a focus on nature.
Birdlife on Getterön
Getterön Nature Reserve is home to characteristic bird species such as the peregrine falcon, avocet and bearded reedling. Naturum på Getterön provides information about wildlife and nature, with a particular focus on birds. Visitors can borrow binoculars and bird books there to explore the reserve. This brings together a clear focus on birds and a visitor centre offering nature information and loan equipment.
