Örnsköldsvik offers a range of ways to spend your stay: local history and changing art exhibitions, works in public spaces, and outdoor activities from walking to mountain biking. When planning, it is worth considering the character and timing of the activities: some exhibitions are permanent, while others change; hiking and paddling options are partly seasonal.
Museums, Workshops and Galleries
The Örnsköldsviks museum och konsthall tells the story of Örnsköldsvik through its permanent exhibition Arkiv Ö, which is aimed at children and adults. Exhibitions in the art gallery change several times a year. The creative workshop offers embroidery, wood carving, knitting and other crafts. History, changing art and hands-on creative activities offer distinct experiences here.
H1 Sliperiet is a cultural centre for creative activities for all ages; it is easy to visit and open to everyone. In Filmrummet, visitors can try film, photography, 3D modelling, printing and VR headsets. The specific programme may change. Bror Marklund’s workshop is his preserved original summer studio from Funäsdalen. It contains tools, sketches, models and personal belongings; the workshop was donated to the Municipality of Örnsköldsvik.
The small Galleri Lokomotiv is located in Örnsköldsvik’s travel centre. It presents at least six exhibitions a year, featuring artists from across Sweden. The Hans Hedberg Museum displays works by Hans Hedberg. For art in the city, the “Silhuetter i staden” walking route takes you through parks and squares to ten works of art. You can start anywhere along the route and walk it clockwise or anticlockwise.
Art and Architecture Along the Way
Örnsköldsviks kyrka was designed by Gustaf Améen and opened in 1910. Its pulpit, made of Ekeberg marble, is by sculptor Clarence Blum. The large altarpiece by Sigurd Möller depicts the Parable of the Great Banquet. These details offer a distinctive focus alongside the exhibitions and artworks in public spaces.
Wander Wonder brings art and movement together in an exhibition along the Fyra Berg hiking trail in Örnsköldsvik. Works by seven artists explore the relationship between a sense of belonging to a place and movement. As the exhibition’s current status should be confirmed before visiting, it is advisable to check before planning your trip.
Hiking, Winter Sports and Cycling
The Gula leden trail on Åsberget is six kilometres long. At Hörnsjön, there is an easy, approximately three-kilometre classic cross-country ski trail, alongside a groomed walking path. Due to ongoing infrastructure work, follow the local signs in the area. The distances refer to different activities and help you distinguish between hiking and cross-country skiing when choosing a route.
The Friluftsfrämjandet hiking section organises both walks close to town and longer outings in and around Örnsköldsvik on weekdays and weekends. In spring, summer and autumn, the organisation also offers paddling for all levels. The programmes are seasonal and should be checked before your trip. Friluftscentralen rents out canoes, including life jackets; check availability in advance.
Skyttis is a sports and recreation facility in central Örnsköldsvik. The Örnen MTB Arena is located at Skyttis, with 30 kilometres of marked paths and trails as well as a paved pump track. Check trail conditions locally. In summer, downhill biking is possible on Varvsberget; the Paradisliften takes visitors to the summit in summer. Check seasonal operations before your trip.
Örnsköldsvik can be reached by train or bus to access the Höga Kustenleden. Check connections before travelling if you plan to use this option.
