Parts of Sorsele lie on an island in the middle of the Vindelälven. At the municipal level, the river flows through the entire area and continues all the way to the coast. This brings together riverside scenery, trails and railway history in the town. When planning, it is worth organising experiences by location and season: some are in the centre, while others depend on the water or the season.
Exploring the water and trails
A riverside promenade runs along the Vindelälven. Stensundsforsen is a rapid on this river, just a walk from the centre; grayling are fished there. This means the riverbank offers both a waterside path and a specific place to fish.
Skibbikken is a sandy beach on the Vindelälven, where the shallow water is suitable for swimming. The Skibbikkleden is a nature trail that is easy to walk, leading from Sorsele to Skibbikken. From Skibbikkeudden, there are wide-ranging views over Nedre Gauträsket, the southern part of Storvindeln. The beach, hiking trail and viewpoint appeal to different interests, without making them a single excursion destination.
For exercise in town, Hälsans stig is an easy-to-walk circular trail in the centre. The hilly, floodlit running and training track serves a different purpose: it is used for exercise and recreation all year round, for walking and running during the snow-free season, and for cross-country skiing in winter. Hälsans stig remains a circular trail in the centre; activities on the floodlit track vary with the season.
Boat tours are also available in Sorsele, and cycling is another possible activity. Ice fishing is popular with local residents. The swimming pool gives families the opportunity to swim and has a sauna. As its opening arrangements may change, please check them before your visit.
Railway history and local culture
The Inlandsbanemuseet is housed in the old freight depot at Sorsele station. Its exhibition covers the history and construction of the 1,289-kilometre Inlandsbanan. Its location in the station building and the subject of the exhibition give railway history both a local connection and the wider perspective of the entire route. The museum is open seasonally; its 2026 season began on 1 June and included the summer opening period.
The present-day Sorsele kyrka was built in 1859–1860. As you approach Sorsele, its church tower can be seen from a great distance and serves as a landmark.
At Hembygdsgårdsområde, Åttkantslogen houses a local heritage museum about the history of the municipality. You can also walk around the small lake, learn about historic buildings and their history, and enjoy views of the Vindelälven. This combines a walk with insights into the municipality’s history.
Local food culture is also part of the town’s character: Palt is considered a speciality in Sorsele Municipality. On Wednesdays, villagers get together for a communal lunch.
