Råstrand lies on the Vindelälven. The landscape around the village includes forests, waterways, mountains and wetlands. This offers several options for planning your trip: birdwatching, activities on the water or exploring the forest. You can decide which of these is most important based on your travel interests.
Landscape and Seasonal Nature Watching
During the spring migration, birdwatchers often visit the area around Råstrand because of its diverse birdlife. If you are especially interested in birds, this period offers a useful guide for planning. Berry and mushroom picking are also possible activities, but they depend on the season. Birdwatching and foraging therefore have different seasonal considerations.
Forest walks are also available in Råstrand. Together with the forests, waterways, mountains and wetlands, they offer a range of options that are not limited to the river.
River Activities, Views and the Beach
On the Vindelälven near Råstrand, you can fish in both rapids and calmer stretches of the river. Fishing permits are required. Canoeing and kayaking are other possible activities; their practical availability may change. Check before your trip if you are planning a paddling excursion. Fishing and paddling involve different plans for the river, and fishing requires a permit.
Kåtabostugan offers a lovely view of Råstrand. It is a distinct viewpoint for anyone who would like to see the village from above.
Bojmosavan has a shallow sandy beach just after the turnoff from Road 363. Beach conditions are seasonal and should be taken into account when planning a visit. Unlike fishing, which requires a permit, the practical consideration here is the season.
Historical Traces and Local History
According to local historical accounts, Råstrand is said to have been recognised as an independent village in 1796. Local tradition says that Hans Nilsson settled in Råstrand around 1792. The accounts concern different aspects: one relates to the reported settlement of an individual, while the other concerns the village being recognised as independent. To place these events in context, it is helpful to distinguish between the two statements rather than treating them as the same kind of event. According to local historical accounts, Stone Age sites are said to be located on the south side of the Vindelälven near Råstrand. The time periods are far apart: Hans Nilsson’s reported settlement and Råstrand’s recognition as an independent village concern the late 18th century, while the Stone Age sites mentioned earlier are said to date back to a much earlier period. The local history therefore encompasses both archaeological traces and village traditions.
