Ammarnäs lies in the heart of the Vindelfjällen Nature Reserve. The natural meadows of the Ammarnäs Delta have been used for haymaking since the early 19th century. Together with Sámi cultural heritage and hiking, this history is one of the special themes of a stay here.
Haymaking, the Church and Sámi Cultural Heritage
The Ammarnäs Delta is also home to hay barns: they feature a unique under-frame construction and were built particularly high to protect them from annual flooding. Their design and height thus reflect different aspects of the barns: their distinctive construction and protection from flooding.
The Ammarnäs lapplatsen deltat Cultural Reserve is located in the village of Ammarnäs. The village church was built between 1910 and 1912 to designs by architect Torben Grut. A well-preserved Sámi church town, with goahti huts and log cabins, lies right next to the church. The church and the church town are two distinct points of reference for exploring the history and cultural heritage of the village.
Ammarnäs Hembygdsgård is located on Hemnäset, where the Vindelälven and Tjulån rivers meet. Every July, the Ammarnäs hembygdsdagar are held there, featuring an auction, a pentathlon and musical entertainment. If you are travelling in July, it is worth checking the specific event dates.
Nature Information and Hiking Guidance
Naturum Vindelfjällen Ammarnäs provides information about the area's animals, plants, geology and cultural history. Experienced staff offer hiking tips and practical advice. Naturum also offers guided tours in the Vindelfjällen Nature Reserve. It is therefore a place to explore both nature-related topics and get practical guidance for hikes.
Short Trails and a Longer Kungsleden Hike
A well-developed network of local hiking trails in Ammarnäs offers routes ranging from one-hour walks to day hikes. The Kungsleden involves a much longer time commitment: the section between Ammarnäs and Hemavan is 78 kilometres long. Ammarnäs is the natural starting point for a week-long hike on the Kungsleden to Hemavan. This gives you a choice of shorter walks and a longer hike, with clearly different time commitments.
Winter activities also differ in terms of activity and geographical scope. Ammarnäs has 21 kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails, while the surrounding area has 150 kilometres of groomed snowmobile trails. The first figure refers to ski trails in the village; the second refers to trails in the surrounding area.
Fishing and Potato Growing
The Tjulån is known for its grayling fishing. The Ammarnäsöringen is a distinctive strain of large-growing brown trout. These two features describe different aspects of the local fishery and fish population.
Another local tradition began at Potatisbacken: the residents of Ammarnäs have been growing potatoes there for more than 150 years. The story of the village thus extends beyond churches, hiking trails and nature to include a long-standing tradition of potato growing.
