Skärholmen brings together historic sites, landscapes and cultural attractions. If you are looking for accommodation for your stay, the different highlights can help you choose: the nature reserve focuses on walks and green spaces, while farms, church architecture and cultural centres reveal other sides of the district. The age ranges given for individual attractions can also help when planning for people with different interests.

Nature and landscape

In Sätraskogen Nature Reserve, you can walk through open meadows, oak groves and old spruce forest. The landscape therefore includes both open spaces and different types of woodland. If you enjoy switching between meadow and forest on a walk, you will find several clearly defined landscape types here. Skärholmsspåret also runs through the nature reserve. If you would like to plan your nature outings around a particular trail, you can include its route in your plans.

Vårbergstoppen consists of two adjacent elevations on the southwestern edge of the Skärholmen district. Vårbergstoppen Landscape Park is part of a large green area at the southern end of the district. Vårberg also has viewpoints, birdwatching spots, an outdoor gym, and picnic areas with tables and barbecue facilities. So, in addition to walks, there are options for wildlife watching, exercise and spending time at a picnic spot.

Sätra friområde was established as a nature reserve in 2006. The year provides a historical point of reference for the development of nature conservation in the area.

Farms, architectural history and traces of the past

The present-day buildings at Skärholmens gård were built in the 18th century. The farm hosts various cultural activities and also has a café. This brings historic buildings and a cultural landmark together in one place, without requiring you to plan around a specific event date.

Skärholmens kyrka was inaugurated in 1976. The brick building is square in shape, with an open courtyard. The church is designated K-märkt and belongs to the green category, the second-highest level. Its inauguration year, building material and floor plan offer different ways to understand the building: when it was built, its architectural form and its classification.

Earlier settlement is also linked to specific places. A Viking Age burial ground is located by Västerholmsskolan in Skärholmen. A few hundred metres east of Skärholmens gård, a hilltop fortification dating from prehistoric times has preserved sections of its walls. These two sites represent different traces of the past: a burial ground by the school and a hilltop fortification east of the farm.

Cultural venues and activities

SKHLM Konsthall connects contemporary art with local life in SKHLM. Kulturhuset Stadsteatern Skärholmen is an open meeting place for arts and culture, with theatre, cinema, a creative workshop, a gallery and activities for young people. Its stage programme includes both classics and newly written plays for children and young people aged 5 to 19.

Other activities also differ in their age groups and types of activity. Stationen is a free cultural and leisure centre for young people aged 13 to 19. The children’s trail near Skärholmens gård has 34 stations. Parkleken Kulan is free to enter and open to all age groups; it is only a short walk from Sätra centrum. These details make the differences clear: Stationen is aimed at young people, while Parkleken Kulan is open to all age groups; the children’s trail, in turn, is defined by its 34 stations.
