In Botkyrka, trails wind through old forests and along lakes, while traces of culture tell the stories of the history of each place. From May to October, the municipality also organizes walks and bus tours to areas of cultural and historical interest. If you are interested in a particular tour, check the dates in advance.

Hiking trails with different focuses

The three short, signposted walking trails of Kulturspår Botkyrka tell the story of their respective locations. Audio tracks complement the stops with personal stories. The trails can be reached from the Fittja, Hallunda and Norsborg metro stations. This lets you combine a walk with the audio stories rather than simply following trail markers.

For a longer route, there is Grödingeleden: this 32-kilometre section of Sörmlandsleden runs from Lida via Grödinge and Näslandet to Skanssundet. Along the way are archaeological remains, ruins of former farms, hillforts and scenic viewpoints; the route runs alongside Stora Träsket and through old coniferous forest. The Sjöslingan in Vinterskogen Nature Reserve is a different kind of route. It is 3.2 kilometres long and passes through old forest by Brosjön, Mellansjön and Övrasjön.

The Aspens naturstig, just over seven kilometres long, circles the southern part of Lake Aspen. Cultural sites and archaeological sites lie along the route, as do wetlands where boardwalks and floating bridges carry the trail across. The approximately eight-kilometre-long Sankt Botvids pilgrimsled, by contrast, connects Salem Church with Botkyrka Church. Six meditation spots, trail markers and a brochure with a map and texts accompany the pilgrimage route. The trails therefore differ not only in length, but also in whether forest, wetlands, cultural history or a pilgrimage route is the main focus.

Forest, water and wildlife watching

In Mälarskogen, varied mixed forest, rocky terrain and views over Lake Mälaren alternate. The nature reserve can be reached on foot from the Hallunda and Norsborg metro stations. The stations are about 1.5 kilometres south of the reserve; SL buses run nearby. In Snäckstavik, there is an observation platform in the eastern part of the wetland. From there, you can spot, among other species, Eurasian teal, whooper swans, green sandpipers and wood sandpipers. In Botkyrka, swimming is possible in inland waters, lakes and the sea.

Around Lida, there are a total of 35 kilometres of interconnected exercise trails linking Lida, Harbro and Brantbrink. There are also three prepared mountain bike trails to choose from: a green one measuring 2.8 kilometres, a blue one measuring 7.1 kilometres and a red one measuring 4.7 kilometres. The stated lengths help you estimate the distance you want to cover; the colours identify the respective trails. The Accropark at Lida offers climbing, balancing and ziplining high up in the treetops. As seasonal opening arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the latest visitor information.

Cultural sites and living history

At Hågelby-Skrävsta, the signposted Skrävstastigen and Saltbergstigen walking trails explain how people lived here over the millennia. The landscape is largely preserved, with archaeological sites and agricultural land still intact. Hågelbyparken, meanwhile, is a manor estate used as a public park. Visitors can stroll through the large park and visit the 4H farm. Hågelby Hus also serves afternoon tea with scones and accompaniments, fine pastries and a selection of teas. The menu and availability may change.

At Tumba bruksmuseum, the history of Swedish banknotes and the lives of the people who lived and worked at the Tumba paper mill take centre stage. A visit includes exhibitions and the historic surroundings; general tours of the mill and tours of the paper workshop are available. Visitors can also make their own paper there. Hogslaby holds several open days each year, when visitors can try activities including blacksmithing, bread baking and wool processing.

Mångkulturellt centrum provides knowledge and understanding of the effects and significance of migration on people’s lives in Sweden. Visitors will find exhibitions, a specialist library, an art education workshop, programme events, the MKC shop and the Tavernan restaurant. The grounds of Subtopia feature murals, stencil art and graffiti by artists from the surrounding area and beyond; a digital guide lets visitors explore independently. The 20-metre-long urban art wall, Lilla Väggen, is open to everyone around the clock.

Botkyrka konsthall in Fittja is dedicated to contemporary art and offers exhibitions, guided tours, artist talks, workshops and performances. Admission is free; as opening arrangements may change, it is best to check before your visit. Botkyrka Church is also a place with a long history: it is the oldest church in the parish, whose origins date back to the 12th century, and was built in honour of Saint Botvid. An accessible ramp is located at the entrance.
