Cherry blossoms and rolling terrain shape the rural character of Enhörna, also known locally as Körsbärslandet. Enhörnalandet is a peninsula in Lake Mälaren, northwest of the urban area of Södertälje. The villages on the peninsula include Stjärna and Aska. The landscape, historic churches and archaeological traces give the area several different facets: depending on your interests, you can explore the landscape, learn about church history or visit the finds at Husby backe.

Churches and Traces of the Past

Ytterenhörna kyrka dates back to the 12th century. A runestone stands in front of the church, and two carved stone slabs with rock carvings, known as Tunahällarna, are also located at the entrance to the churchyard. A detail inside the church also tells part of the area’s history: a 16th-century brass crown survived a fire. Överenhörna kyrka was built around 1200 and was originally the manor church of the royal estate at Husby, now called Ekensbergs säteri. It stands on a hill surrounded by fields, forest and water.

You can visit the excavation area at Husby backe. Paths run around the site, and information boards explain the different excavation areas. A glass bead and postholes found during excavations point to a predecessor of the Husby estate dating back at least to the Viking Age. Finds from investigations at Husaby Enhörna date from the Viking Age, approximately 800 to 1050 AD, through to 1650. Different traces of time can thus be found side by side here: from interpretations of early settlement to finds dating to the early modern period.

Trails, Views and Water

The Täljeleden hiking trail runs all the way to Enhörnalandet. It is marked in yellow and runs mainly along hilly woodland paths. A 3-kilometre connecting trail starts in Sundsvik and follows a gravel road to the Täljeleden. The 3-kilometre route from Sundsvik follows a gravel road, while the yellow-marked Täljeleden runs mainly along hilly woodland paths to Enhörnalandet. You can climb Lurberget to enjoy the view and have a picnic of your own.

There are also several facilities by Lake Mälaren. Underåsbadet Enhörna is a beach with grassy areas and a volleyball court. At the bathing area in Gillberga, ramps lead onto the jetty and from the beach into the water. If you’re interested in the summer landscape from the water, there are jetties in Sandviken and Ekensberg, where steamboats to Stockholm, Mariefred and Birka call during the summer. Check the current timetable before travelling.

Local Experiences and Practical Information

Enhörna Hembygdsmuseum comprises Småskolan, Storskolan, Skolgården and Husaby. The areas have been adapted so that people with reduced mobility can view the exhibitions and use the toilets. The schoolyard has a playground that is part of the museum. Småskolan serves coffee, juice and bread seasonally. Bus route 787 serves the area around the museum; the Överenhörna kyrka stop is about 75 metres away. According to the timetable, routes 787 and 787X operate between Södertälje Centrum and Enhörna. Check the latest connections before travelling.

In winter, the grounds at Enhörna friluftsgård have ski trails, including a 3-kilometre illuminated trail and a shorter illuminated trail. There is also a small toboggan run for younger children. The activities vary with the season: in summer, trails, bathing spots and steamboats are among the attractions, while in winter there are ski trails and a toboggan slope. Check current seasonal conditions before your visit.

For a break, Café Stallet at Norrlöts Handelsträdgård combines fika with an activity for children: while you stop for refreshments, children can ride pedal cars in one of the large greenhouses. The café serves, among other things, open sandwiches, hot dogs, pancakes, as well as homemade pastries, cakes and small baked goods; the menu may change. You can also buy plants at the garden centre. If you’re interested in items with a history of use, the old barn at Norrlöt Antik & Loppis has antiques and curiosities, furniture, porcelain, decorations and textiles. The selection may vary.
