A 28-hectare nature reserve lies around 1.5 kilometres north of Hökön; the preserved railway station dates from the 1910s. Nature and local history offer different reasons to stay. The annual market and flea market are additional attractions. Two distinctions are especially useful when planning: the natural areas have different visiting conditions, and the market is usually held on a particular Sunday in July.

Bogs and Different Visiting Conditions

Hökön is in the northern part of Osby Municipality, close to the border with Kronoberg County. A municipal description dated 3 July 2025 characterises the settlement as family-friendly. Tyringemossen is nearby, north of Hökön. Capercaillie, black grouse, hazel grouse, black woodpeckers, short-eared owls, pygmy owls and boreal owls continue to be sighted in and around the reserve. Sightings may vary depending on the season.

Tyringemossen itself has no hiking trails or roads that make the area easy to access. By contrast, there are boardwalks and viewing points at Låkan in Vakö myr Nature Reserve. Vakö myr can be reached from the public road between Hökön and Fanhult via a forest track located about 400 metres east of the bog. These are different conditions for visiting nature areas: check current access conditions before your visit, as they may change.

Railway Traces and School History

The SOEJ railway line (Sölvesborg-Olofström-Elmhults järnväg) opened in 1901, and a station was built in Hökön. Hökön’s preserved railway station dates from the 1910s. Opposite it stands a wooden house from around the turn of the century, which formerly served as a shop. The different dates point to several periods in the history of the area.

The school’s history has also been recorded: as part of “Boken om Hököns skola,” a working group documented the school’s activities from 1921 to 1973. Together with the railway traces, this offers another perspective on Hökön’s past, beyond its nature reserves.

Market, Flea Market and Events

Hökön’s market and flea market take place every year, usually on the first Sunday in July. Check the date for the relevant year. At the 2026 summer market, coffee with waffles and hot dogs were served. This information applies to that edition; check current dates for any later event.

An orienteering walk with questions for adults and children was held at Hökön’s school. An inaugural gathering titled “Social Gemenskap,” featuring a talk by Reymond Olsson, was also held there. Olsson has had his own apiary for many years and has extensive knowledge of beekeeping and the important role bees play in nature. The two events showcase different formats: a walk with questions and a gathering with a talk.
