Wetlands, the ruins of Munkeboda and the Göta Canal give Norsholm several distinct points of interest for a stay. In the nature reserve, a detour from the hiking trail leads to the ruins; at the lock, canal traffic and its design come into focus. The area also offers manor-house history, a seasonal veranda by the canal and Norsholm as a starting point for the eastern section of the Göta Canal cycle route. You can focus on the landscape and history, or consider Norsholm as a starting point for a cycling trip.
Wetlands and trails
Norsholm Nature Reserve covers two extensive wetlands. A detour from the hiking trail in the reserve leads to the ruins of Munkeboda, which are located on Slottsholmarna. They are considered the remains of a bishop’s residence dating from the 14th century. The trail thus connects a natural area with a specific historical destination. Two different activity options are mentioned: the hiking trail has a specific detour to the ruins, and Norsholm is a suitable starting point for the eastern section of the Göta Canal cycle route.
The lock and manor-house history
Norsholm Lock bears the baptismal name “Biskop Brask”. It is a single-chamber lock; at the normal water level in Lake Roxen, the difference in elevation is 0.8 metres. The new manor house in Norsholm was built in 1865–1866 for Eva Elisabeth Adelswärd, based on plans by architect Axel Kumlien. Today, only the tall basement level of the never-completed castle remains of the old manor house. For those interested in architecture, these are two distinct aspects: the new manor house is notable for its construction period, patron and architect; the surviving section of the never-completed castle is the specific point of reference for the old manor house.
Breaks by the Göta Canal
Norsholms slusscafé is in the centre of Norsholm, right by the Göta Canal. It serves homemade fika, filled sandwiches and meals; it also has a child-friendly garden with plenty of room to play. If you plan to stop for refreshments or visit the garden, check in advance which offerings and facilities are currently available, as the food menu and facilities may change. A rest area with benches, tables and a barbecue grill is located along the Göta Canal towpath. Norsholm guest harbour has 20 berths and ten 6 A power outlets. The options for a break are therefore different: the café serves food and has a garden with room to play, while the rest area has benches, tables and a barbecue grill.
Places to stay in Norsholm
Kapten Bille’s, an STF hostel, restaurant and café, is housed in an old harbour warehouse by the Göta Canal in Norsholm. It has 44 beds in twelve rooms, and there is a bright guest kitchen on the upper floor. In the warmer months, Kapten Bille’s offers veranda seating with views of the Göta Canal and boat traffic. It is advisable to check current availability before booking.
