Kimstad Church has medieval origins and is considered one of Sweden’s most magnificent Baroque churches. The historic church setting of Kimstad kyrkomiljö (K24) includes the church and the older buildings next to it. Together, the church and older buildings provide a tangible starting point if you are interested in religious architecture and the built history of Kimstad.
Church, Cemetery, and Local History
The Piper family, the last owners of Löfstad Castle, are buried on the south side of Kimstad Cemetery. Their ornate funerary coats of arms can be seen in the church. A digital tour explores the history of the cemetery and church, adding to the picture of this part of the local cultural heritage.
A 2016 report by the local heritage association describes the school museum at Klockargården farm. It lists stuffed swans, hand-operated dental drills, and a homemade pipe organ among the historical objects. These examples offer an unusual glimpse into the museum’s collection.
Railway Heritage and Getting There
The Östgötapendeln stops in Kimstad on the Norrköping–Motala and Mjölby–Tranås routes. If you plan to travel by train, check the timetable for your travel dates. Kimstad’s railway history is also reflected in the distinctive railway setting along the Östra stambanan, including a station building dating from the 1870s. Today’s rail connections thus sit alongside a historic reminder of the line.
Riverside Landscape and Seasonal Experiences
The Motala ström connects Lakes Roxen and Glan near Kimstad. This connection to the river adds a regional landscape perspective to the area’s cultural and historical themes.
Midsummer celebrations at Krokhagen have been a tradition since 1972. Another seasonal event is the Grebyrundan, a family orienteering event on the floodlit trail of Kimstad GoIF. It takes place on five Monday evenings in early summer, starting and finishing at Krokhagen sports ground. If you want to plan your trip around an event, take the current dates into account.
Conditions for outdoor activities also vary with the season. When there is enough snow, Kimstad GoIF Skidcenter can prepare about 15 kilometres of cross-country ski trails. People with visual impairments can ski in winter and run or walk on Kimstad’s exercise trails without needing a personal companion.
A digital navigation aid is available for the Grebyrundan, enabling people with visual impairments to run independently. It tracks the route using high-precision GPS and gives directions through Bluetooth headphones. This specific assistance is for the orienteering event; the winter skiing and outdoor activity options are separate.
Plan Your Stay Around Your Travel Plans
When looking for a holiday rental, you can first decide whether church and railway history or a seasonal event will be the focus of your stay. For events, check the current dates; for cross-country skiing, check the snow conditions. If you are travelling on the Östgötapendeln, also check the timetable for your chosen dates.
