Åby offers a range of ways to shape your stay around outdoor activity and nature: hiking trails, a nearby cycling route and Åbybadet. The destinations differ in route length, landscape and type of swimming. Torshagsravinen is also close to the centre; wildlife sightings depend on luck and the season.

Hiking trails: circular routes of varying lengths

There are hiking trails in the Åby-Jursla area. Close to Åby, Lunnsjöskogen Nature Reserve has a three-kilometre circular trail marked in orange that starts and ends at the car park. In Ågelsjön Nature Reserve, “Ågelsjön runt” is an approximately ten-kilometre circular trail, also marked in orange, that passes many viewpoints. For route planning, this means choosing between three kilometres in Lunnsjöskogen and around ten kilometres at Ågelsjön. The trail descriptions also emphasise different details: the shorter loop specifies the car park as both its starting and return point, while the longer loop is characterised by its many viewpoints.

Torshagsravinen: hiking trail and wildlife watching

A hiking trail runs through Torshagsravinen, a ravine located about 150 metres from Åby centre. Bus routes 430 and 432 serve Åby centrum. If you are planning to travel by bus, check the current timetable before setting off. Trail conditions can also vary, so it is a good idea to check them before your visit.

With a little luck, you may spot a white-throated dipper by the stream; sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed. Seven bat species live in Torshagsravinen, and their activity is also seasonal. The information differs: a white-throated dipper may be spotted, while the bats’ seasonal activity involves seven species. If you hope to see a white-throated dipper, don’t count on it as part of your plans.

Cycling and waterside scenery

Close to Åby, the southwestern part of Dvardalaskogen Nature Reserve can be reached via a paved cycle path. This clearly identifies both the surface of the route and its destination within the reserve.

Further afield from Åby, the Pjältån meadows lie in the valley between Åby and Jursla, where several streams converge. The waters in the nature reserve provide spawning grounds for sea trout and brook lampreys. The confluence and its role in reproduction give this landscape an ecological focus that differs from the specific route details of the hiking trails.

Swimming at Åbybadet

Åbybadet offers swimming lessons as well as women-only, men-only, youth and family swimming sessions. Medley has operated the swimming facility since December 2024. This means that, alongside hiking and cycling, there is also a swimming option with explicitly named types of sessions. If you are planning to take lessons or attend a particular type of session, check the swimming facility’s current information in advance.
