1,312 islands, relatively untouched vegetation and important bird nesting areas: the archipelago shapes Luleå’s character with remarkable diversity. At the same time, access to the islands changes with the seasons. You can therefore get to know the landscape not only through its nature, but also through the different ways of reaching it.

The archipelago in every season

Luleå’s archipelago is accessible year-round. In summer, excursion boats run daily; in winter, cleared ice roads lead to some of the larger islands. These are different seasonal options, not a single route to all the islands. If you are planning a trip, check the schedule; in winter, you should also check the ice conditions in advance.

There are also many opportunities for fishing in the archipelago: pike, perch, whitefish and sea trout are among the fish species mentioned. Before your trip, check the applicable fishing regulations and conditions. This lets you plan around the season and your interest in island nature or fishing, without reducing the archipelago’s distinctive character to a single activity.

Church town and history in Gammelstad

Gammelstad Church Town is the best-preserved example of this unique type of church town in Northern Scandinavia and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1996. More than 400 church cottages have been preserved; the tradition of staying overnight temporarily continues to this day. The cottages give the place a special historical dimension: they represent not only preserved buildings, but also an overnight-stay tradition that continues today.

The church in Gammelstad has stood in the same place since 1492 and is still in use. For a more in-depth visit, the Gammelstad Visitor Center offers guided tours year-round. Check the current tour schedule in advance. Luleå Cathedral offers a different perspective on sacred architecture: the neo-Gothic red-brick church was inaugurated in 1893 and is Sweden’s northernmost and youngest cathedral. Luleå Cathedral Parish offers concerts, musical services and other musical events; the program may change.

Museums to explore and experience

Hägnan is an open-air museum of cultural history. During the summer season, it is open to the public daily; check the current dates before your visit. At the farms, costumed interpreters give an impression of times gone by. You can also watch animals in their enclosures, walk on stilts and play with children. Hägnan thus combines historical impressions with activities on site, without limiting the experience to a single type of visit.

The Norrbotten Museum presents exhibitions about Norrbotten, cultural heritage and the wider world. Offerings for visitors of all ages include guided tours, workshops and lectures. As the program and operating status may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before your visit.

At Teknikens Hus, the focus is on science, technology and mathematics. The science centre is for all age groups. Visitors can operate trucks, forestry machines and harvesters, or use a VR headset to experience a work assignment at a mine or steelworks. Compared with the cultural-history themes of Gammelstad and Hägnan, it offers a hands-on approach to technology and scientific questions.

Cycling and local cuisine

Luleå has well-developed urban cycling routes and around 170 kilometres of cycle paths. Mountain bike trails can be found at Ormberget, in Karlsvik and in Måttsund; trails for experienced riders and beginners are mentioned. This distinguishes urban cycling from the mountain biking options without implying a connection between the individual trails. Trail conditions may vary depending on the season.

Hemmagastronomi is a specific address for an evening of small plates. The restaurant offers an evening menu with a wide selection of snacks or small plates inspired by northern Swedish and international cuisine. Menus and services may change, so check the current offering. The Luleå Tourist Center provides information about archipelago boats, attractions, excursions and events, as well as brochures and maps. Opening hours may also change.
