Nearly 700 Sámi silver objects make the Silversalen gallery at the Silvermuseet a special way to explore the region’s history. The exhibition spans the Middle Ages to the 20th century. Mujttalus offers a different perspective on Sámi life, focusing on holidays as well as everyday life. Objects and ways of life thus come together under one roof, without the exhibition being limited to a single era.

The Silvermuseet is located at Torget in the centre of Arjeplog, beside National Road 95, the Silvervägen. Arjeplog Church is also in the centre, on a peninsula in Lake Hornavan and right next to the market square. The church is open to visitors during the day; access may vary seasonally.

Sámi Culture and Local History

Doktorsgården was the home of Dr Einar Wallquist, founder of the Silvermuseet. The museum offers guided tours there every summer. As this is a seasonal offering, check the dates before you travel. Another historical thread leads to Arjeplog’s winter market, whose history dates back to 1642. To this day, the market is a meeting place for community, reunions and trade.

The nearby mining area in Adolfström also brings landscape and local history together. The area is open to the public, and features an exhibition house with models and photographs about mining at Nasafjäll and transporting ore to the smelting house in Adolfström. Marielund offers a different experience: the nearby handicraft barn sells art and handicrafts, and serves coffee and homemade food. Artworks are displayed publicly on the grounds in summer.

Rapids, Views and Trails

The nearby Märkberget Nature Reserve is home to the mountain of the same name and the powerful Märkforsen rapids on the Laisälven River. A trail about 1.5 kilometres long follows the rapids to a shelter and a fire pit. The distance gives you an idea of the route; facilities along the trail may change. If you plan to use these stopping points, check their condition before your visit.

Just outside Arjeplog rises Galtispuoda, an easily accessible low mountain at 800 metres above sea level. From here, views stretch across Arjeplog’s waters and mountains. Road access may vary in winter. The Municipality of Arjeplog provides excursion guides for more hiking trails and peaks. The Gröna Bandet route passes through the Arjeplogfjällen.

Birdwatchers also have a specific landmark to look out for: the nearby tower in Sälla stands in a bird-rich area about eight kilometres from the centre of Arjeplog and rises ten metres above the ground. Those interested in fishing can find opportunities along the Vaukaleden at pedestrian fishing platforms in the centre. Separately, on a larger municipal scale, there are eight fly-fishing stretches here, with a combined length of 105 kilometres.

Winter Trails and Different Tours

For cross-country skiing, Djuptjärn offers illuminated trails of one, 2.5, five and 20 kilometres. Öberget also has an illuminated trail, 2.5 kilometres long. Galtis is one of the two alpine ski areas listed for Arjeplog.

Guided snowmobile tours and snowmobile rentals are available in Arjeplog. There are 1,600 kilometres of groomed snowmobile trails and routes to choose from; trail conditions vary by season. Check tour availability and trail conditions before you travel. This winter activity is distinct from the illuminated cross-country ski trails and the alpine ski area.

The Silvervägen, or Road 95, runs from Skellefteå to the Arjeplogfjällen and the border between Sweden and Norway. One specific road tour starts in Arjeplog: the Polar Circle Tour goes as far as the Arctic Circle. It includes an outdoor lunch prepared by the guide over an open fire. As commercial tour details may change, check the information before making plans.

Local Cuisine as a Shared Experience

On the Edible Country experience, guests can gather ingredients with local guides, cook and eat together. The menu is inspired by forests, lakes and meadows. The focus is therefore not just on the finished meal, but also on the shared journey from gathering ingredients to eating. The offering may vary; check current availability when making plans.
