The Arctic Circle runs through the north of Överkalix. In summer, the sun barely sets there, while in winter it sometimes barely rises: midnight light and midwinter darkness are among the striking contrasts of this landscape. Waterfalls, forests, and viewpoints reveal Överkalix from different perspectives—from experiences in nature by the river to traces of rural life.

Waterfalls Through the Seasons

Jockfall is home to Jockfallet, a nine-metre-high waterfall—the highest drop on the Kalix River. The river offers a variety of fishing opportunities, including grayling, trout, whitefish, and pike, especially salmon. The nature around Jockfall also offers activities such as hiking, cycling, and snowmobiling.

Linafallet is another striking stop: at 16 metres high, it is Norrbotten’s tallest waterfall. It lies at the confluence of the Lina River and the Ängesån; there is an accessible viewing platform at the waterfall. Check conditions at the nearby bridge before your visit.

Brudslöjan changes character with the water level. When water levels are high, the waterfall is powerful in spring and early summer; at normal or low water levels, it looks more like a flowing veil in mid- to late summer. Brudslöjan is right beside Road 835, with a parking bay immediately next to the waterfall.

Forests, Trails, and Views

Laxforsberget Nature Reserve is an old-growth forest area with ancient pines and deciduous forests. A hiking trail and views of mountains, valleys, and waterways connect the forest with the surrounding landscape. In the reserve, hiking, camping, lighting a small fire, picking berries and edible mushrooms, as well as fishing and hunting in accordance with applicable laws, are permitted. Snowmobiling is permitted on sufficiently snow-covered ground. Before your trip, check the protected-area rules for possible changes.

Malungsberget Nature Reserve lies along the E10. Its landscape features include three mountain peaks, ancient pines, and extensive fields of rounded stones; there is also a red fitness trail. A hiking trail leads from the car park to one of the peaks. This offers a clear starting point for a hike and a view of the area’s distinctive landforms.

Grelsbyberget has hiking and fitness trails, rest areas, and fire pits. From there, views stretch across the Kalix River, Överkalix centre, the village of Boheden, and Djupträsk. Brännaberget offers a different perspective, with views of Överkalix, the Kalix River, Tallviksavan, Ängesån, and the surrounding mountains. Halljärv has marked hiking and running trails of varying lengths.

Cultural History and Encounters

The old settler farm Rikti-Dokkas was built in 1847 by the Sámi man Pher Persson and is now protected as a cultural heritage site. The farm includes three houses, as well as stables, a bakehouse, a dairy room, a sauna, a storage building, hay barns, and a threshing floor. The Dirivaara Stone, also known as Lappstenen, is associated with a different kind of tradition: the story says it was once a sacrificial site used by the Sámi.

In Nybyn, Martingården, a preserved farmhouse dating from the early 19th century, shows what rural life in Norrbotten was like. The farm is one of the region’s earliest listed buildings. Guided tours are available during the snow-free season.

At Kaatis Reindeers, you can feed reindeer and moose and listen to Sámi stories. Visits are by advance booking only. A farm shop specialising in Sámi handicrafts adds to the experience. Svartbyn has a tractor museum with more than 200 different tractors and machines, as well as other historical everyday items; you must contact the museum in advance to arrange a guided tour.

Local Experiences and Getting Around

At Fårfika, you can feed the sheep at Jakobgården and enjoy a Swedish coffee break in the sheep pasture or farm shop. Polcirkelbär’s selection is seasonal: the strawberry season runs from July to mid-August, and strawberries are available for picking or already picked. From late August to September, they also sell already-picked, organically grown blackcurrants.

Much of central Överkalix is easy to explore on foot. A rental car, bicycle, or taxi is recommended for getting around the surrounding area. Överkalix can be reached by plane, car, or bus; by road, the E10 and National Road 98 lead there. Check current timetables with transport providers before travelling.
