A rock floating on the water as a work of art: the Tornedalskvinnan is designed in exactly this form in the centre of Övertorneå. It is heated to 37 °C all year round and can be used as a seat. If the temperature on site is important to you, check the conditions before your visit.

Art, river views and distinctive places

Konstens väg runs along the old railway embankment in Övertorneå and features artworks by renowned artists. You can explore the trail on foot, by bike or on skis in winter. At Kattilakoski, you can enjoy views of the rapids on the Torne River. Near Övertorneå, at Pullinki, there is a restored cairn and a viewpoint with one of the most impressive views in the entire valley.

Luppioberget also combines landscape and discovery: from there, the view stretches across the Torne Valley, and visitors can explore interesting caves. You can drive to a car park at the Lapland View Lodge, then hike to the summit. As access conditions may change, check them locally before setting off.

The Isovaara Nature Reserve is located in the village and is designated to protect natural values and provide opportunities for recreation. Near Övertorneå, the Torne River runs directly along the border between Sweden and Finland. The river landscape and the location on the Finnish border are therefore defining geographical features of the area.

Trails and seasonal experiences

For a hike in the Rantajärvi Vildmark area, the Naarajärvi Trail is one specific option: the forest route is 6 kilometres long and can be explored independently using a map and instructions, or as part of a guided hike. The Armasjärvi–Luppio Trail is 5.6 kilometres long; route distances and conditions may change. Near Armasjärvi–Luppio are two adjacent peaks, separated by a large boulder field called Pirunpelto.

In winter, Banvallen offers 29.1 kilometres of ski tracks along the old railway embankment through the river landscape. Track grooming and conditions may change seasonally. The trail options therefore differ not only in length: Konstens väg can be explored in various ways, while a specific winter distance is given for the ski tracks on Banvallen.

In winter, guests can meet reindeer at The Reindeer Herd, learn about Sámi culture and everyday reindeer herding, and try lasso throwing. Contact with the reindeer takes place during the winter season, when the animals are in the enclosure. A dog-sledding tour is also offered in Övertorneå; its seasonal availability may vary.

Seasonal ice fishing for pike, trout and perch is possible near the Arctic Circle in the Rantajärvi area. In the Rantajärvi Vildmark area, you can rent canoes on Lake Rantajärvi; seasonal availability may also vary here. These two activities offer different ways to experience the area's waters.

Culture, nature and local history

Övertorneå Church is known for its organ with sculptures by Mårten Redtmer. Aunesgården is an old local heritage and cultural farm with an exhibition on the history and culture of the Torne Valley. Röda Kvarn is a historic entertainment venue. Together with the art in the village, these places offer different ways to explore history and culture, without any one building representing the full diversity.

Övertorneå's culture is shaped by Sámi, Swedish, Finnish and Norwegian traditions. At the Hanhivittikko Cultural Reserve, you can explore the grounds all year round and look inside buildings that are open. Guided tours take you among the plants, animals and buildings. The valuable meadows and pastures there are home to a great diversity of species, including plants that are endangered in Sweden.

After a guided experience of around one hour at Hanhivittikko, traditionally dressed fäbod attendants serve coffee with pastries or a meal, usually with a traditional Tornedalian character. If you would like to include this offering in your plans, check the current menu and booking conditions.
