Tävelsås Church stands by Lake Tävelsåssjön. The local area also includes a burial ground in the northern part of Tävelsås and a bathing spot by the lake. When planning your stay, you can consider three questions: How did the church develop, what older traces can be found in the area, and what characterizes the “Tävelsåssjön runt” route? The church, burial ground, route and bathing spot offer different ways to explore cultural history and the lakeside landscape.

The Terrain and Layout of the Area

The terrain is also part of what defines Tävelsås. The village lies on several elevations known as drumlins, which extend from north to south. These elongated rises give the landscape a distinct orientation and add a spatial perspective to the individual buildings and destinations by the lake. If you would like to consider more than individual sights when deciding on your trip, you can also think of the shape of the terrain as part of the area's character.

The Church and Its Building History

Tävelsås Church has medieval origins and is one of the few cruciform churches in Kronoberg County. It was expanded in the second half of the 18th century, when the parishes of Tofta and Tävelsås were merged; some of the building material came from Tofta Church. Its building history therefore spans from medieval beginnings to an expansion associated with the merger. Its form and chronology offer two different perspectives: the cruciform shape places the church in an architectural context, while the expansion draws attention to the development of the church in the 18th century. The 18th-century expansion and the medieval origins mark different phases in its building history.

Burial Ground in Northern Tävelsås

In the northern part of Tävelsås lies a burial ground with 15 stone settings, probably established during the Iron Age. This gives it a different historical focus from Tävelsås Church: the church dates back to the Middle Ages, while the burial ground probably points to the Iron Age. The dating is uncertain. For those interested in cultural history, these are two distinct historical references: the development of a church building and a burial site thought to date from the Iron Age.

The Route and Lakeside Bathing Spot

The “Tävelsåssjön runt” route is just under 5 km long and mostly follows forest tracks, paved paths and cycle paths. From the headland by Smörhålan, you can look across the lake towards the church. The view brings the lakeside landscape and Tävelsås Church together in a single panorama. If you follow the route along the shore behind the waterworks, you will reach a barbecue area. The distance gives you a concrete basis for planning your day; trail conditions may vary by season, so it is worth taking them into account when planning.

The Tävelsås bathing spot on Lake Tävelsåssjön has a floating jetty and a small sandy beach. Facilities also include a barbecue area, a playground, a picnic area and a toilet. Check the facilities on site before your visit. The two lakeside attractions differ in what they offer: the route is described by its length, path types and views, while the bathing spot is defined by its beach, jetty and practical facilities.
