The southern tip of Torsjön reaches into the center of Ingelstad. Inglinge hög is part of the area’s historic landscape: this Iron Age burial ground comprises around 130 ancient monuments; its largest mound is Småland’s largest burial mound, measuring 37 meters in diameter and 6 meters in height. Water reaching the center of the village and a burial mound of this size give the area two clear points of reference. If you want to combine cultural history with a focus on water, you’ll find both here.
History Across Several Eras
In the Ingelstad–Torsås–Torsjö area, continuous settlement dates back to the Stone Age. Traces of several eras are visible in the landscape. During the Iron Age, Ingelstad developed into a kind of center of power. This broader regional perspective adds to the specific historical significance of Inglinge hög.
Östra Torsås Church stands on the southern edge of Ingelstad, where country roads intersect. It was built in the Neoclassical style in the 1840s and inaugurated in 1852. Östra Torsås cemetery has a thousand-year history. The church’s construction history and the cemetery’s long history therefore represent different historical time spans.
Torsjön, the Lakeshore and Activities
A promenade with a playground, benches and a bathing area runs along the west shore of Torsjön. Sikabacken is a bathing area on Torsjön with a floating jetty, a toilet and changing rooms. A 1.3-kilometer illuminated fitness trail also starts at Sikabacken. You can bring a stroller to Sikabacken.
Between Sikabacken and the center of Ingelstad, Smalspåret runs along Torsjön as a paved greenway. Smalspåret is part of the Sydostleden long-distance cycle route, which runs between Växjö and Simrishamn. For orientation, note the specific details: Smalspåret describes a corridor between Sikabacken and the village center, while the fitness trail starts at Sikabacken and has its own length.
Canoeing, Skyeån and Winter Activities
Canoeing is available on Torsjön and Skyeån. Skyeån flows through the cultural landscape behind Ingelstad’s school. The lake and the waterway are two distinct options for canoeing. Prästabacken is Ingelstad’s ski and sledding hill, with a tow lift. Operations are weather-dependent; if you’re planning to visit the hill, check in advance whether the weather will allow it to operate.
Inglinge hög is also associated with a recurring tradition: a day-long annual festival is held there in memory of King Inge. If you’d like to include this event in your travel plans, check the date in advance.
When looking for a hotel in Ingelstad, you can weigh up what you’re interested in doing during your stay: historic sites and architectural history on one hand, and Torsjön, the lakeside promenade and opportunities for outdoor activities on the other. This makes it easy to choose the area based on what matters most for your trip.
