Åryd’s industrial complex is located on a promontory in Årydssjön. This setting makes the lake a tangible point of reference for understanding the town’s industrial history. The ironworks in Åryd was founded in the mid-17th century; the blast furnace at Åryds Bruksmiljö was built in 1850. Meanwhile, stage SL5 of the Sigfridsleden reaches Åryd, and Årydssjön can be explored by canoe. This gives you three distinct themes to choose from when planning your trip: industrial history, hiking and time on the water.
Industrial history, with advance planning
The founding of the ironworks and the construction of the blast furnace mark two different points in time: the ironworks was established in the mid-17th century, while the blast furnace at Åryds Bruksmiljö was built in 1850. A blast furnace was used to smelt iron, so its construction date draws attention to a specific technical feature of the town’s history. Guided tours at Åryds Bruksmiljö are available by prior arrangement. Arrange a time before you arrive if you would like to include a tour in your plans. There is also a summer café on site. As it is a seasonal offering, don’t plan on it being open year-round; check the opening hours for your visit.
Hike and explore the lake
Stage SL5 of the Sigfridsleden runs from Hemmesjösjön to the Sandvik bathing area and continues to Åryd; three lakes lie along the way. Both the named locations and the sequence of lakes can help with navigation. You can then continue north on the Sigfridsleden. As trail conditions may change, check the current route before setting out. If you would rather spend time on the water than hike, Årydssjön can be explored by canoe. The options are distinct: on SL5, the route and the lakes along the stage are the focus; by canoe, it is Årydssjön itself.
More ways to enjoy your stay
Utegym Åryd offers the opportunity to work out your whole body. Use is free when the sports area is not occupied. There is a climbing tower at the playground on Bokvägen in Åryd. Play equipment may change, so it’s worth checking before your visit if this particular piece of equipment is important to your plans. Since 2023, a designated dog-bathing area has been marked on the path between the car park and Åryd bathing area. If you’re visiting the bathing area with a dog, you can take this marked area into account when planning.
When looking for a holiday apartment in Åryd, you can start by deciding what you want your stay to revolve around: an arranged visit to Bruksmiljö, a hike on SL5 or a canoe trip on the lake. This way, you can plan your accommodation around the activities you want to do, rather than following a set order. If you’d like to combine several activities, keep their requirements in mind separately: guided tours must be arranged in advance, the café is seasonal, and trail conditions may change.
