Forests, trails and different scales
A narrow ridge and steep slopes shape Hannabadsåsen: the nature reserve is a glacial moraine ridge and has a 690-metre-long hiking trail marked in orange. Hannabadsåsen features beech forest as well as mixed forest with beech, oak, birch and spruce. The trail’s length offers a different scale from the longer routes in the region.
Rönnö presents a different landscape: it has largely untouched wetlands and old-growth forest with trees about 200 years old. The nature reserve also has two hiking trails, one five and the other six kilometres long. Trail conditions may change seasonally; check them before setting out. Moss-covered stone walls and documented house foundations at Lenas add traces of cultural history to the natural landscape.
The longer trails also differ considerably. The 19.7-kilometre Markaryd–Traryd route on the Nydalaleden is part of the S:t Birgittavägarna and follows a pilgrimage route through forests and along waterways. The Bokelundsrundan nearby, by contrast, is an approximately four-kilometre circular walk east of Traryd, passing through forest terrain and along forest tracks. One of its stops is a Bronze Age burial mound about nine metres in diameter.
Science and regional history
Different areas of science come together at Vetenskapshuset in Markaryd: it has a Nobel Prize Museum, a playful energy exhibition in the form of an escape room, and an advanced chemistry laboratory. The venue also offers interactive exhibitions and activities for teenagers and adults. Its range therefore extends from the Nobel Prize theme to energy and chemistry.
Places in Markaryd used for cultural walks are marked with signs and QR codes. Visitors can then read about the history independently in text form. Another perspective on the region is offered by the preserved railway line between Markaryd and Traryd, which is used for heritage rail services and railbike rides.
Markaryd Local Heritage Park features historic settings such as a Ryggåsstuga, a barn and a smithy. The Ryggåsstugan displays painted wall hangings that are particularly characteristic of the local area, as well as instruments: the old fiddle belonging to Spel-Jonas and Hälls-Johannes’ Magdeburgerspel. The Skvaltkvarn at the heritage park also tells a story of technology. The water-powered mill includes a water channel, the regulating mechanism’s shaft, a millstone and a flour bin.
Further historical details can be found at Södergård, including a yellow main building, a mill and the area known as Ängen. The former inn stood there before it burned down in 1864. Södergård was also the site of Sweden’s second post office. The Malmö Folkbank building in Markaryd was completed in 1909.
