Virestad lies on the eastern shore of Lake Virestad. The town’s history leads to the church, which incorporates parts of a medieval predecessor. For active days, the 26.0-kilometre Virestadssjön runt cycling loop and the Helge å canoe trail in the surrounding area offer different perspectives on the waterscape. Recipes for Småland kringlor are also among the town’s culinary heritage.

Church and architectural history

Today’s Virestad Church was built in 1799–1800 on the site of an older church. Parts of a medieval church are incorporated into the present stone building. Thus, the same building brings together a medieval past and a new construction dating from around 1800. The clock in the tower dates from 1810, adding another precisely dated feature.

The church also contains an altarpiece painted by Pehr Hörberg, considered the largest in the Nordic region. The building’s history, the clock and the altarpiece give the church different historical and artistic connections. The legend of Kaja also has a documented history: it was already known in Carl von Linné’s time, and he wrote down the folk tradition during his journey in 1749.

Cycling and canoeing in the surrounding area

The Virestadssjön runt cycling loop is 26.0 km long and rated green, or easy. You can park at Virestad Church and start and finish your ride there. The church is therefore also a convenient starting point for the loop. Check the route conditions and local parking rules before setting off.

Near Virestad, Välje bathing area on Lake Virestad is a suitable starting point for a canoe trip on Helge å. The Helge å canoe trail is a water route for paddling through lakes and river sections. Cycling and canoeing thus offer different ways to experience the waterscape: a designated cycling loop and a paddling route through various waterways. Check water levels and operating conditions before paddling.

For paddlers who want to stay overnight during their trip, there are eleven canoe rest areas near Virestad, with toilets, firewood and waste bins. Facilities at the rest areas may vary seasonally, so check before your trip.

SmĂĄland kringlor from Virestad

Recipes for SmĂĄland kringlor originate in Virestad, in SmĂĄland. They include coarse kringlor, coffee kringlor and so-called glass kringlor. These three varieties give the recipe tradition specific names and add a culinary connection to the architectural and landscape history.

When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between activities based on their connection to the town: the church is also a possible starting and finishing point for the cycling loop, while the suitable entry point for the canoe trip is at Välje bathing area nearby. This way, you can decide whether church history and cycling or paddling on Helge å should be the focus of your stay.
