Those considering a stay in Göteryd can explore nature and local history through several distinct themes. The nature reserve borders the church village and extends north to Lake Römningen. Established and marked trails lead through this landscape; the church, historic buildings and prehistoric finds add to the picture of the area.

Nature Reserve and Lake Römningen

The Göteryd Nature Reserve stretches north along a long shoreline to Römningen. The lake is naturally nutrient-poor, and its varied shores include several habitat types. Svensäng, a restored open meadow, lies in the eastern part of the reserve. Grazing and mowing keep it open and shape this part of the landscape.

A constructed trail crosses wet areas on boardwalks. Signs cover nature, cultural heritage and the history of the area. The trail brings together landscape and local history, without limiting either to the same period or focus.

Marked Trails and Different Routes

For planning purposes, two marked routes can be distinguished by length and theme. The Germund Jonaes cultural trail is 3 kilometres long. It starts east of Göteryd Church and passes through the nature reserve. Signs tell stories of people and events from earlier times. The Germund Jonaes trail also passes Tullberg’s Grave. At the far northeastern edge, a small cross bearing Tullberg’s name marks the grave.

A marked cycling route of about 14 kilometres runs around Lake Römningen. Signs along the route also point to natural and cultural history. Comparing the routes, you’ll find a 3-kilometre cultural trail and a much longer route around the lake; they also differ in their respective route types and geographical focus.

Along the Römningen runt route, in Ekenäs, are the remains of an old dam with an eel trap. This site adds a tangible example of past use to the historical references along the trails.

Building History and Archaeological Traces

Göteryd Church was built by Tholander between 1856 and 1858, west of the old church. Bishop Henrik Gustav Hultman consecrated the church in 1862. Göteryd cemetery also contains a large square monument, which is probably a funerary chapel. The building history and the monument reveal different facets of the historic village landscape.

Slöjdskolan has its own local history too: in 1889, it was moved from Öckershult in Hinneryd to its current location in Göteryd. Today, the building is the clubhouse of Göteryds Hembygdsförening. Göteryd also has more than 80 documented stone cist graves, making the area one of the densest stone cist regions in Sweden. Stone cist graves in the area around Römningen date from the Late Stone Age to the Early Bronze Age.

Beach and Göteryds marknad

Near Göteryd, Ramnäs badplats has a sandy beach, a bathing jetty, a barbecue area and benches. The bottom slopes gently and is considered child-friendly; there is also a toilet. The beach adds an opportunity to spend time by the water to the area’s natural and cultural attractions.

The annual Göteryds marknad is another part of the local scene. It can attract up to 4,000 visitors. Alongside the marked trails, lake and historic traces, the recurring market day offers another reason to visit.
