Västervik combines medieval city history with maritime exhibitions and activities on the water. When planning your stay, you can take two different perspectives: historic sites and museum themes, as well as kayaking and boat connections to the archipelago. Nearby destinations such as the Gränsöleden trail are another option. This can help you decide which experiences you’d like to make time for.

City History and Building Phases

Stegeholm originally guarded the entrance to the bay and the medieval merchant settlement of Västervik. S:ta Gertruds kyrka offers another perspective on the city’s history: the medieval church is located in Västervik on Hälleberget. The chancel and sacristy were built in the 1430s, the nave around 1450, and the tower around 1670. These different building phases tell a longer story of the church’s origins than a single date would.

Stegeholm Castle Ruin is also the setting for a recurring cultural event: Visfestivalen takes place there every year. If you’d like to plan your trip around it, check the event dates for your stay.

Maritime Themes and Museum History

The exhibitions at Västerviks Museum cover stories from the 16th century to the present day. At Sjöfartshallen, visitors can learn more about Västervik’s maritime history, adventures, ships and shipping companies. The BOATMAN – Maritime Heritage exhibition features Tjustökor, built using the UNESCO-classified clinker-building technique. It also explores how cultural heritage is preserved and safeguarded for the future. As the status and presentation of exhibitions may change, check what is currently on display before your visit.

Västerviks Museum also offers a guided city walk exploring the history of the city, its buildings and its residents. Dates and prices are listed in the event calendar. The Psykiatriska museet in Västervik preserves another historical perspective: it maintains one of the few remaining facilities from the formerly closed world of psychiatric care.

Naturum Västervik focuses on the sea and the archipelago. Together with the maritime exhibitions, it gives your stay another cultural focus alongside the historic buildings.

Kayaking and the Archipelago

You can start kayaking within the city and paddle north along Gamlebyviken. The Gamlebyviken runt kayaking route covers 41 km on a complete circuit of the bay and can be started in Västervik or Gamleby. This gives you two different ways to plan: a city start with a set paddling direction, or a circular route with a clearly stated total distance.

Boats also connect Västervik with the islands of the archipelago: smaller boats operate year-round, with larger ones running in summer as well. As seasonal services may vary, it’s worth checking the timetable before planning your trip.

Gränsö as Another Destination

The Gränsö Nature Reserve is located close to the town centre. The 12 km Gränsöleden trail runs around the protected area on the Gränsö peninsula. This designated walking route adds another way to explore the area around Västervik, complementing the opportunities on the water. The combination of city history, maritime themes and different activities helps you shape your stay around your interests.
