Along a long coastline stretches the Västervik archipelago, with around 5,000 islands, islets and skerries. This diversity shapes the way Västervik is experienced: the sea and island landscape are just as much a part of the destination as the town’s history and maritime culture. Those who want to get to know the landscape more closely will find various ways to explore it—from nature exhibits to trails and paddling routes.

The Archipelago Landscape and Trails

Naturum Västervik explores forests, mountains, waterways, lakes, islands and the sea. One exhibit focuses on life in the Baltic Sea’s shallow coastal zone. Here, a broad view of the region’s natural environment meets a specific subject from the coastal area.

In the wider area around Västervik, the 12-kilometre-long Gränsöleden trail runs through a nature reserve on the Gränsö peninsula, outside the town centre. Another distance relates to the Tjustleden: its fourth stage includes an approximately 8-kilometre connecting route to Västervik via Marsbäcken. These two details offer guidance for different hiking plans, without implying a walking time.

There are also various ways to take in the surroundings from the water. The Gamlebyviken runt kayak route can be started in Västervik or Gamleby; the full circuit of Gamlebyviken is 41 kilometres long. Check local access conditions in advance. The route from Fiskaretorget to Skeppsbrofjärden passes Slottsholmen and runs through Skeppsbrofjärden and central parts of the town.

Music, Seafaring and Town History

Västervik’s history is closely linked to Stegeholms slott. When the town was moved from Gamleby to its present location in 1433, it grew up around the castle ruins—also as protection from Danish attacks. The Visvägen connects with this history: marked by signs on the ground, the walking route leads from Fiskaretorget to the ruins and explores the local history of music. Every summer, VisFestivalen takes place there in calendar week 28. Check the dates and programme before your visit.

The permanent Sjöfartshallen exhibition presents Västervik’s maritime history. The town’s former shipbuilding industry is also notable: during the second half of the 16th century and the 17th century, it was extensive in Västervik and at times larger than that of several of the country’s major shipyards. Båtsmansstugorna tell another part of the town’s history. They were built in the 18th century to house the seamen of Tjusts båtsmanskompani. There is a café and a walking route past the historic houses and their cobbled paths; check current café opening hours in advance.

The churches also reflect different periods of construction. S:ta Gertruds kyrka stands on Hälleberget and is medieval: the chancel and sacristy were built in the 1430s, the nave around 1450 and the tower around 1670. S:t Petri kyrka was consecrated in 1905 and built in the Neo-Gothic style. In Tjust, Törnsfalls kyrka is the only surviving medieval church besides S:ta Gertruds kyrka.

Island Connections and Active Exploration

Archipelago boats run from Västervik and Loftahammar to the islands of Hasselö, Idö and Rågö. There is also the year-round option of experiencing the Tjust archipelago by post boat; the trip visits the islands of Sladö, Torrön, Hasselö and Norra Malmö. Check routes, timetables and departure arrangements before travelling.

The cycling routes on offer vary considerably in length and character. The Ankarsrum–Västervik mountain-bike route is around 60 kilometres long and follows a mix of small roads, gravel roads and forest trails. Västervik is also the starting point or destination of Kustlinjen, a 560-kilometre cycling route between Västervik, Stockholm and Öregrund. For both routes, it is advisable to check for current route information.

Those interested in climbing will find granite climbing areas in Västervik, with routes for a range of experience levels. Guided tours and courses can also be booked through the Västervik climbing club; check the current options in advance. Alongside coastal and town history, there are specific activities to choose from, clearly differing in scope and type.
