Vildmarksvägen begins in the south at the E45 in Strömsund and is Sweden’s highest paved road. The full loop is 500 kilometres long and runs through the municipalities of Strömsund, Vilhelmina and Dorotea. This gives the journey a broad scope. At the same time, a variety of discoveries await, from a river that flows partly underground to an open-air museum with an annual tradition.

Karst, gorge and cave

The Bjurälven Nature Reserve encompasses Scandinavia’s largest karst area. The Bjurälven River flows partly underground there. From the car park at Leipikvattnet farm, a three-kilometre hiking trail leads through lush alpine vegetation to the karst area. This offers a chance to discover the landscape both through its geological features and along a clearly described trail.

Water also shapes the landscape at Hällingsåfallet: the waterfall plunges into a gorge more than 40 metres deep. A five-kilometre hike begins downstream from the car park at Hällingsån and Hällarna. Korallgrottan offers a different natural highlight. Its passages are five kilometres long, making it Sweden’s longest cave. Guided tours are available.

Bog landscape and getting around

Vackermyren Nature Reserve consists of four limestone-rich wetlands and bogs. A 450-metre-long boardwalk is suitable for wheelchairs, walkers and strollers. There is an accessible dry toilet at the entrance and a rest area with benches on the bog. Here, close-up views of the bog landscape go hand in hand with practical visitor facilities.

Wildlife enthusiasts can watch animals independently along Björnvägen, including bears, moose, roe deer and birds of prey. The municipality of Strömsund also offers fishing in mountain waters, large lakes and forest waters. You can go paddling on Ströms Vattudal. These activities invite you to explore the landscape in different ways: where would you like to watch wildlife, fish or get out on the water?

Another walking route is the seven-kilometre, easy-to-walk boardwalk between Strömsund campsite and the bird lake with its observation tower near Tullingsås. The municipality also has kilometres of groomed snowmobile trails. These offer different ways to explore the area: a clearly defined boardwalk, snowmobile trails or an activity on the water.

History and culture in Strömsund

Strömsunds hembygdsgård is an open-air museum with around thirty buildings, exhibitions and historic settings. A Christmas market is held on the grounds every year on the first Sunday of Advent. Much of the site has been adapted for accessibility, and it is easy to reach by bus and car. The grounds are also home to Jätten Jorm, a six-metre-high statue.

The Geologiska trädgården offers another way to discover regional history and geology. Maps show the geology of the region, while cross-sections of the earth illustrate the history of the mountain range. Together with the exhibitions at the open-air museum, this perspective on the landscape complements the nature experiences with cultural and geological insights.
