Church history and a folk music tradition that continues to be nurtured shape Föllinge’s cultural character; cross-country skiing adds a clear winter focus, while views of Lake Föllingesjön complete the landscape. As you consider Föllinge as a travel destination, you can first decide whether local history and music or a winter trip with cross-country skiing is your priority. The different themes offer distinct points of interest.
Föllinge Church: a long tradition, today’s building
The first church stood on the site of today’s Föllinge Church at the beginning of the 17th century. Föllinge Church has served as a local gathering place since the 17th century. The present building was constructed much later: it was built in 1997–1998 and inaugurated on 4 October 1998. The dates associated with the present building therefore do not mark the beginning of the area’s church history, but its construction and inauguration. This makes it possible to distinguish the site’s older religious connections from the history of the present building.
Folk music and dance tradition
Föllinge’s rich folk music heritage continues to be nurtured and developed. The Föllinge-Hotagen dance tradition includes polskas as well as old dances. Alongside the church’s architectural and community history, music and dance offer another way to explore local culture. Those interested in regional culture can therefore discover both the church’s history and a living musical tradition.
Föllingeveckan as part of cultural history
During its 50 years, Föllingeveckan attracted dance and music enthusiasts from Sweden, neighbouring countries and further afield, including France, Italy, the Netherlands, the USA and Japan. The last event—and the 50th—held in Föllinge took place in summer 2022; the tradition has since continued in a mobile format. Föllingeveckan should therefore be distinguished from the folk music heritage that continues to be nurtured and developed in Föllinge: it is part of the area’s event history, while the musical tradition lives on.
Cross-country skiing and landscape
In the centre of Föllinge, Cederbergskolan is directly connected to cross-country ski trails. This makes cross-country skiing a tangible winter activity in the area. When choosing when to travel, you can therefore make a clear distinction: cross-country skiing is a winter pursuit, while the church, dance and folk music shape Föllinge’s cultural character. Föllinge also offers views of Lake Föllingesjön, adding a landscape dimension to its cultural and winter attractions.
