Ånn lies on the northern shore of Lake Ånnsjön. The lake and the surrounding bogs form a roughly ten-square-kilometre wetland close to the fells. Trails through the bogs, activities on the water and mountain hikes offer different ways to explore the area. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can plan your stay around whether you are most interested in discovering the lakeshore landscape, the trails or winter activities.

Wetland and Birdlife at Lake Ånnsjön

Almost all of the Ramsar site at Lake Ånnsjön is designated as a Natura 2000 site. Enadeltat and Halsnäsdeltat make up the bird protection area by the lake. These names point to a defining feature of the landscape: water, bogs and birdlife are closely connected here.

Birdwatching also has a regional connection. A bird observatory was established in 1988 in Handöl, by Lake Ånnsjön. Research projects on the development of bird populations take place there every year, and interested visitors can take part. The observatory is in Handöl, not in Ånn.

Trails to the Bogs and into the Fells

From Ånn railway station, the route to Lake Ånnsjön is signposted. Below the station runs Fågelstigen, a walking trail to the bogs by the lake. This gives you two different points of reference: the signposted route to Lake Ånnsjön and the named walking trail towards the bog landscape.

For longer outings, trails from the Enan car park lead towards Sylarnas Fjällstation, Silverfallet and Storulvåns Fjällstation. If you plan to start from there, check the car park conditions before travelling. Ånn is also a starting point for mountain hikes to several nearby peaks that are easy to climb. Storsnasen is one example: the easy hike offers views over the valley, Lake Ånnsjön and Åre.

Water Activities and Cultural History

You can fish for Arctic char and trout in Lake Ånnsjön; the lake and its surroundings also offer opportunities for kayaking. At Käringnäset, there are historic rock carvings dating back to around 2000 BC. The site can be reached by kayak, canoe or stand-up paddleboard. This means that the same lake offers both activities on the water and a cultural-history destination.

Österbåtstan is a local swimming area with two jetties. There is also a sauna, and the area is managed by Vallans Samfällighet. For a stay by the water, this spot complements the walking trails and lake outings with a dedicated swimming area.

Winter and More Activities

In winter, people go long-distance ice skating on Lake Ånnsjön. There are also several well-maintained snowmobile trails around Ånn, with views of the fell landscape. Rules and conditions for the snowmobile trails may vary; check the conditions for your dates before setting out. Cycling is also possible in Ånn.

When planning your stay, it is worth considering these options separately: bog trails and birdlife, water activities, mountain hikes and winter activities each call for a different choice of outings. So when looking for a holiday rental, consider the kind of stay you prefer, and check the specific starting points for any planned outings. Ånn is accessible by car, train or bus.
