Storlien offers several ways to plan a stay: alpine skiing, ski trails, hiking trails and a landscape of wetlands and mountain birch forest. The activities vary in type and scope. Having a clear idea of what you would like to do will help you plan your stay.

Railway and Local History

Storlien railway station is 592 metres above sea level and is Sweden’s highest railway station. The railway line between Östersund and Trondheim opened in 1882; the Bräcke–Storlien section continues towards Trondheim in Norway. If you are considering travelling by train, check the timetable for your travel dates.

Ski Trails and Alpine Slopes

The alpine ski area in Storlien has nine ski lifts and 23 slopes. The ski trails are separate: north of the railway line, there are seven ski loops totalling just over 40 kilometres. South of the line, there are five ski trails, ranging in length from 2.5 to over 16 kilometres. This comparison involves different measurements: the total length of the seven loops is given for the north, while a range of trail lengths is given for the south. Ski trail grooming can vary depending on the time of year, so check the current conditions before settling on a particular loop. A winter route runs from Storlien to Blåhammaren and Sylarna. The history of skiing in Storlien also includes Slalomliften: the village’s first ski lift was put into operation in 1942.

Hiking Trails and Landscape

Blomsterstigen in Storlien was created in 1890 and is believed to be Sweden’s first hiking trail used for health and recreation. A hiking trail in Storlien offers views of Snasahögarna, Sylarna and Stenfjället. A 17-kilometre trail starts at Blåhammaren. Storlien and Storvallen lie north of the route.

Storlien’s bird sanctuary includes wetlands, the larger pond Topptjärn, smaller pools and scattered mountain birch forest. The landscape therefore features both waterlogged areas and mountain birch. If you would like to include nature as a focus of your stay alongside ski and hiking trails, this offers another theme for planning your trip.

Cycling and Paddling

There are eight different cycling trails in Storlien: Sandtjärnsrundan, Ridstigen, Vindarnas Tempel, Skurdalsporten, Atlantleden, Lyxlinjen, Serpentinen Storlien and Smuggler’s Run. The cycling trails are often shared with hikers. When comparing the sections, the northern part of the cycling trail system is considered more family-friendly, while the southern part is more challenging.

Paddling on mountain lakes is also an option: canoes can be rented in Storlien. Availability may vary by season, so check whether the offer is available for your travel dates.
