Vålådalen brings together mountain trails, winter sports and Sámi cultural history with nature experiences by the water. The season is an important factor when planning a trip: cross-country ski trails are seasonal, mountain conditions change, and conditions at the water and beach at Nulltjärn also vary. Choosing a focus helps you plan activities sensibly, rather than trying to fit every area equally into your stay.
Mountain trails and geological formations
From Vålådalen, hikers can climb one of the peaks of Ottfjället. The summit of Östra Ottfjällstoppen is about 6 kilometres from Vålådalen and reaches 1,265 metres above sea level. Seasonal changes in mountain conditions are relevant when planning an ascent. Vålådalen also offers many kilometres of running trails and mountain paths for trail running.
The Pyramiderna formations were shaped by erosion remnants of the inland ice and by meltwater deposits. Walking on the formations is prohibited to protect them from wear. Check the current protected-area regulations before your trip.
Sámi culture and history
There are numerous archaeological remains in the Vålådalen Nature Reserve, showing that people have been present there since the Stone Age. The reserve also preserves traces of Sámi life and work. These range from remains of an early hunting culture to huts and facilities used in modern reindeer husbandry. Reindeer from the Sámi communities of Tåssåsen and Handölsdalen are found in the reserve.
Grönvallen is a well-preserved private Sámi settlement with preserved kåtor and other buildings. Naturum Vålådalen explores the interplay of nature, culture and history in the mountains of Jämtland. Exhibitions and opening hours may change, so check the current hours before visiting.
Cross-country skiing, cycling and activities by the water
The ski trail system in Vålådalen includes 14 different trails, six of which are lit. The offering is seasonal. A ski school offers lessons for different ability levels, either privately or in groups. Check the current courses before booking.
The public roller-ski track in Vålådalen is 5 kilometres long, with about 3 kilometres lit. Its use may be subject to an operating schedule. Check the hours of use in advance. At the Trail Center at Vålådalen Fjällstation, you can rent trail bikes, dirt bikes, children's bikes and hardtails for gravel cycling. Since the selection may change, it's worth checking current availability if you have a particular bike in mind.
Cycling around Vålådalen Fjällstation uses nearby trails shared with hikers and runners. Seasonal restrictions may apply in the protected area. Nulltjärn has a sandy beach and shallow, clear water; conditions at the water and beach vary by season. The Vålån River is popular with whitewater kayakers and rafters. Providers and conditions may vary, so check current options before making specific plans.
