Hishult is a destination for travelers interested in historic architecture, modern art and trails through moorland, marshland and forest landscapes. Cultural highlights include the four-winged Gammelgården, Konsthallen Hishult and the history of the present-day church; marked hiking trails add their own distinctive landscapes. An important point for planning: Hishult Church is currently closed.

Gammelgården: Farm Architecture and Life in Earlier Times

Gammelgården in Hishult is a four-winged farm dating from the 18th century. Its residential building has an open roof structure in the South Göinge style. A cultural-historical assessment published in 2025 describes the entire complex as an example of a traditional, fully enclosed, four-winged farm in southern Halland. At Gammelgården, two scales are thus side by side: the enclosed layout of the farm and the construction of the individual residential building.

The farm offers insights into life and culture in earlier times. A description published in 2025 also calls Gammelgården a central local venue for recurring festivities, as well as activities and guided tours for school classes and other groups. If you are planning to attend a specific tour or festivity, check the date in advance.

Modern Art in Hishult

Since its founding in 1994, Konsthallen Hishult has aimed to show outstanding modern art from the Nordic countries, particularly Sweden. It presents six major exhibitions a year. The art gallery is surrounded by a sculpture park, a Zen garden, Grafikrummet and Boklådan. This gives Hishult a distinct focus on modern art alongside its history of farms and architecture.

If a particular exhibition is the reason for your trip, check the program for your travel dates. This lets you plan your trip around an exhibition rather than relying solely on the gallery’s general focus.

Church and Archaeological Traces

Hishult’s present-day church was built in 1901–1902 and designed in the Art Nouveau style. Its baptismal font is a Renaissance work made of heartwood and is considered one of the finest of its kind in Halland. The church is currently closed. If you would like to see the church building or the baptismal font, check in advance whether a visit is possible.

Another historical trace comes from archaeological investigations carried out in the spring and summer of 1999. Remains of a so-called bell-founder’s pit were found immediately outside the church wall, east of the church. This discovery adds an archaeological find with a precisely specified location and date to the history of the building and its furnishings.

Marked Trails and Landscapes

The yellow-marked Hishultsslingan trail passes through moorland and marshland near Gammelgården. Three marked walking loops lead from Gammelgården through beautiful landscapes and forests, and over bridges. The landscape features differ: moorland and marshland are the focus of Hishultsslingan, while the loops feature forests and bridges. If you want to include trails in your trip as well as cultural visits, you can consider these specific landscape features when choosing where to go.

Sjöboholm and the History of the Surrounding Area

Near Hishult, on a promontory in Lake Oxhultasjön, lie the remains of Sjöboholm manor, whose roots date back to the Middle Ages. In the 15th century and for most of the 16th century, Sjöboholm was the principal seat of Itzholte län. To understand the chronology, it is useful to distinguish between its origins and its later role: the medieval roots describe the beginning of the manor’s history, while the information about its principal seat refers to a specific period. Together with the 18th-century Gammelgården and the present-day church, Sjöboholm broadens the view of the area’s different historical periods.
