Skog combines cultural history with opportunities to spend time by the water. Skogs kyrka houses a copy of the Skog tapestry and a Gustav Vasa Bible; Skogsand is a municipal bathing spot and a possible launch point on a paddling route. A church ruin at Bergviken, the Skog oak and the local heritage farm in Strand complete the picture. Depending on your interests, you can focus on religious history, the landscape or water activities.

The Skog Tapestry, a Bible and a free interpretation

Skogs kyrka houses a newly made copy of the Skog tapestry, one of Sweden’s oldest medieval tapestries. The Skog tapestry was discovered in 1912 during a survey of the district’s churches at Skogs kyrka. The discovery and the present-day copy represent different stages: 1912 marks the discovery, while the copy in the church revisits the textile. The church also houses a Gustav Vasa Bible printed in 1541. The church therefore contains both a medieval tapestry and a book with a precisely specified year of printing.

Opposite the church, in the village of Skog, stands the sculpture “Visit from the Middle Ages.” It is a free interpretation of the Skog tapestry. The comparison reveals a difference: the copy reproduces the tapestry, while the sculpture freely interprets the textile. In this way, the Skog tapestry features in Skog both as a historical work in the form of a copy and as a point of reference for contemporary art.

Church Ruin and the Helgonleden

Another landmark in the area’s history lies on Kyrkudden at Bergviken. The medieval church there was built around 1320. It was abandoned in the early 17th century due to rising water levels; later, it became a ruin. Its history links a specific period of construction with changing water levels and its later status as a ruin. The Helgonleden pilgrimage trail passes the Skog church ruin. Those interested in the route can also include this historical point of reference in their visit.

Landscape and Building Heritage

Skog’s old agricultural area lies amid a scenic woodland landscape. The Skog oak, which is over 300 years old, is a frequently photographed feature of the area. These two details describe different scales: the agricultural area represents the landscape’s farming heritage, while the Skog oak is a single natural and cultural landmark that has stood for centuries.

In Strand, the local heritage farm on Torparbacken has two crofter’s cottages and several other buildings. It offers a different perspective on local heritage from the religious sites in Skog: here, two cottages and other buildings together make up the site. If you want to explore different aspects of regional history during your visit, you can treat the churches and the local heritage farm as separate themes.

Skogsand: Bathing Spot and Paddling Route

Skogsand is one of the municipal bathing spots in Söderhamn Municipality. It has a fine-grained sandy beach, and the lake is shallow. Parking is available at the beach. Skogsand beach can also be used as a launch point for a paddling route on Bergviken in Skog. This gives the same place two different ways to enjoy time by the water: a visit to the bathing spot or the start of a route. If you choose the paddling route, check the local conditions before setting off.
