Industrial history, art and trails along the Ljusnan offer different ways to explore Ljusne. The Bruksmuseum i Ljusne focuses on workers’ lives around the turn of the 20th century; the hyttmuseum displays products and technology from local industry. Konstkraft Ljusne adds art inside the building and along a long graffiti wall. The promenade, paddling, fishing and seasonal winter sports offer further highlights.
Work and industrial history
The Bruksmuseum i Ljusne presents the lives and activities of workers in Ljusne around the turn of the 20th century. Ask the museum about its current opening hours. The Ljusne hyttmuseum displays fire-extinguishing equipment made in Ljusne and an ore crusher from the 19th century. The museum also has a fine forge that operates on certain days. Check which days the workshop is operating before your visit.
The two museums offer different perspectives: the Bruksmuseum focuses on people and everyday working life, while the hyttmuseum features specific equipment and technical objects. Together, they let you discover Ljusne’s industrial history from two perspectives.
Art and architectural history
Konstkraft Ljusne is housed in two buildings. They feature wooden sculptures by Lennart Plahn. On the upper floor of the power station building, a permanent exhibition of his life’s work has been on display since it opened in 2020. Check current access arrangements for the exhibition before your visit. Another art form is the 103 m-long graffiti wall, which is accessible around the clock every day; check access before travelling. During the summer half of the year, Konstkraft holds Paint Jams where everyone can try graffiti. Check the dates in advance.
Ljusne kyrka was inaugurated in 1896 and built in a style that is unusually rare in Sweden. Brown wood and numerous carved columns shape the interior. Visits are possible by telephone appointment. Lennart Plahn’s sagoskog in the nearby area of Ljusne also features carved wooden artworks and wooden figures by the artist, who was born in Ljusne. Check the route there before your visit.
Explore Bruksparken on foot
The Ljusne Promenade runs through Bruksparken and along the Ljusnan River; scenic stretches lie in the park and by the river. Along the way, it passes the former chain factory and former power station, now home to Konstkraft Ljusne. Bruksparken has a boules court and several benches with tables. For a longer route, one option crosses the road bridge to Ljusne harbour and continues towards the pilot station.
The promenade can be reached via the Ljusne torg bus stop. There is parking by the promenade; the area near Ljusnefjärden is suggested as one possible spot. This lets you choose between taking the bus and planning where to park, without confusing the longer route option with the shorter walk.
On the water: paddling and fishing
For the Ljusne paddling route, there are launch sites on the north bank of the Ljusnan in Ljusne and on the south bank by Ljusnefors Camping. Both sites have parking and suitable launch points; check local conditions before setting out. On the route, Lillgrytan has a small lighthouse and a pier that connects the island to the mainland.
When fishing, it is useful to know the different areas and focuses: Ljusne Sportfiskeklubb manages the lower Ljusnan, from the Höljebro kraftverk dam to the freshwater boundary at the sea, and focuses on sea trout in its sport fishing. Salmon and trout fishing is also possible below the power station in Ljusne. The short-term fishing area covers about 9 km of the lower Ljusnan and is divided into three sections. Check the current rules and access before fishing.
Cross-country skiing in Hömyra
In Hömyra near Ljusne, there are illuminated cross-country ski trails measuring 1.6 km and 2.5 km. Lighting and trail grooming are seasonal. A waxing cabin and changing rooms are also available. The two trail lengths offer a clear choice based on your preferred distance; check whether seasonal conditions are suitable before your visit.
