The Halen Nature Reserve brings forests and lakes within walking distance of the densely populated towns of Olofström and Jämshög. Halen is the largest lake in Blekinge; around half of its area lies within the protected area. In total, the reserve covers 809 hectares of land and water. It also offers a specific incentive for wildlife watching: osprey and black-throated divers are among the bird species that find habitat at Halen.

Halen: Forest, Water and Trails

The nature reserve has hiking trails, running routes and horse-riding trails, as well as picnic areas and shelters. Frickabron provides a special link across the lake: the 83-metre-long suspension bridge spans Halen, connects two nature reserves and is crossed by three hiking loops. Here, crossing the water and hiking go hand in hand on several loops.

Other hiking trails have different points of interest. One route leads from Tulseboda Brunnspark to Kulturbrunn Forneboda and continues around Fornebodasjön. The Blekingeleden trail runs through Olofström Municipality and connects with the Skåneleden trail near Jämshög and Boafall. If you are planning a section, check trail conditions before setting out. There is also a described cycling route: it is 29 kilometres long, follows a former railway line and passes through pastureland, valleys and lakes, as well as along streams. Check the surface conditions before your ride.

Paddling and Fishing on the Water

Halen has natural connections to Raslången, Gillesjön, Filkesjön and Immeln, offering opportunities for a variety of canoe trips. The canoe route system is suitable for both experienced paddlers and beginners. Stand-up paddleboarding is one way to experience Halen while swimming and exercising; seasonal availability may vary.

Harasjömåla is another destination for fishing. This nature-oriented sport fishing area is in north-west Blekinge, about ten kilometres north-west of Olofström, and includes 23 lakes and a watercourse. Spinning, bait fishing and fly fishing are available there for both beginners and experienced anglers. Check the current fishing rules and whether a permit is required before your trip.

Industrial History, Literature and Art

Ebbamåla Bruk brings industrial history together with a preserved historic site. The almost completely preserved industrial complex includes buildings dating from the late 19th century to the 1920s and is now an industrial museum. Check access arrangements before visiting.

Olofström’s literary heritage can also be explored in different ways. It is associated with Harry Martinson, Sven Edvin Salje and Pehr Thomasson; museums, author trails and preserved historic settings lead visitors in their footsteps. The Författarmuseet in Jämshög includes workrooms, collections and a school museum. The Stenmuseet in Vilshult offers guided tours and displays tools and artworks by local master stonemasons. Check the latest opening information before visiting.

Aniaraparken is located on the Holjeån and features flowerbeds, a pond and several sculptures by artist Carl Eldh. Nässelfrossa offers a different kind of cultural experience: the festival includes more than 100 events over eight days and is always held in the week after Midsummer. Check the dates for the relevant year before your trip.

Practical Information

The municipal tourist information office at Olofström Town Hall provides information about attractions, events, hiking trails and other activities; free Wi-Fi is also available there. Check the latest service information before visiting. Odasjöslätt on Route 15 is the closest bus stop to the Holje Nature Reserve. It is about 800 metres north of the reserve; check public transport connections before your journey.
