Cycling, canoe trips and cultural attractions give Olofström a range of different highlights. The cycling routes vary in length, surface and layout; at the canoe centre on Halen, you can rent boats. There are also historic sites and themed evenings.
Cycling routes with different profiles
Banvallsleden runs for 29 kilometres between Sölvesborg and Olofström. The paved, traffic-free cycle path follows a former railway line. At 20 kilometres, Halen runt is shorter and runs around Lake Halen on paved and gravel paths through a cultural landscape steeped in tradition. By comparison, Banvallsleden is the longer route, paved all the way; Halen runt combines a circuit of the lake with varied surfaces.
The 4.3-kilometre mountain biking trail in the forests around Brännaregården offers a different experience. It runs along forest paths. Together, these options include a route between two towns, a circuit of the lake and a forest MTB trail, offering a variety of route types. The differences are therefore not just in the distance, but also in the layout of each route.
Canoeing and nature on Halen
From Halen, there are natural connections by canoe to Raslången, Gillesjön, Filkesjön and Immeln. You can rent canoes and kayaks at the canoe centre in Olofström, on Lake Halen.
Halens Camping in Olofström is the main entrance to Halen Nature Reserve. The Frickabron adds another way to explore this natural area: the 83-metre-long suspension bridge connects the Halen and Pieboda nature reserves to form one large, continuous recreational area.
Museums, parks and themed evenings
Olofström is home to the world’s only gallows museum. The Olofström local history museum is located in Holje Park, in a stone building dating from the 19th century. By the Holje River, Aniara Park offers sculptures, green spaces and walking paths. Its name comes from Harry Martinson’s famous epic poem “Aniara”. If you choose based on your personal interests, there are different points of interest to explore: the world’s only gallows museum focuses on an unusual specialist subject, while the local history museum offers a historic setting in a 19th-century stone building.
Vilshult, also within Olofström Municipality, has a cultural attraction of its own: the Stone Museum features an industrial history exhibition about diabase quarrying. Holjebadet hosts themed evenings with a range of focuses, including hammam, water exercise and nature. Themes may change, so check the programme before your visit.
