A Roman theater dating from the 1st century, a castle layered with history, and a beach separated from the residential area by a belt of dunes: Sagunto offers several ways to shape your stay. When choosing a hotel, it helps to first decide what matters most to you—whether that’s cultural history, port and industrial heritage, or coastal landscapes.

Roman Structures and Archaeological Sites

Castillo de Sagunto stands on the site of an Iberian settlement and was expanded over the centuries by the Romans, Visigoths, Muslims and Christians. It was declared a national monument in 1931. During a visit, you can see, among other things, the Albacar, Plaza de Armas, the ancient Roman forum and a historic cistern. The castle thus combines a long history of development with specific areas that shape the visit.

Teatro Romano de Sagunto dates from the 1st century. It has capacity for about 8,000 people and a diameter of more than 90 meters. In 1896, it was the first monument to be included on Spain’s list of buildings declared national monuments. Various stage performances are still held in the theater, especially in summer. If you’re planning to visit for a performance, it’s best to check the schedule.

The archaeological sites also offer different perspectives on Sagunto’s history. Via del Pòrtic is a museum site containing the remains of a Roman colonnaded street, taverns and sacred funerary buildings. Domus dels Peixos, meanwhile, is a Roman house dating from the 2nd century AD, with rooms arranged around an atrium. These sites offer different ways to explore antiquity, through evidence of both public and domestic life.

Museu Arqueològic de Sagunt grew out of a collection of Iberian and Roman inscriptions popularly known as Cuarto de les Pedres—“Room of the Stones.” Its present-day collection is housed in Casa del Mestre Peña. The Gothic building dates from the 14th century and displays a significant collection of archaeological objects from excavations and finds in the city. Iberian-Roman structures and an Islamic cemetery from the 11th century were also discovered at this historic site.

Port and Industrial History

At Grau Vell, the Sagunt i la Mar Interpretation Center tells the story of the development of the city and this emblematic place over the centuries. The museum comprises five rooms and two areas; the five themed rooms are located in a former port warehouse dating from the 18th century. Former port facilities have also been preserved at Grau Vell. These include a fortín with a coastal watchtower, battery, warehouses and an enclosed courtyard dating from the 16th and 18th centuries.

Another chapter in the history of industry is explored at Alto Horno número 2. It was built in 1922 and rebuilt in the 1960s. Visitors can explore its museum-style interior, climb through its levels and enjoy panoramic views from the top. Access and visiting arrangements may vary; if this visit is important to your plans, check the current options.

Coastal Landscapes and Nature

Playa de l'Almardá is about 1,650 meters long and around 100 meters wide. Its surface consists of sand and pebbles; a belt of dunes separates the beach from the residential area. The coast is also notable for its ecology: Playa de l'Almardá is home to valuable flora and fauna. Its size, terrain and dunes give the beach a different character from the historic buildings that are the focus of a cultural stay.

As a complementary nature destination in the wider area, Marjal dels Moros lies within the municipal boundaries of Sagunto and Puçol. It has been part of the Natura 2000 network since October 31, 1995, when it was designated a special protection area for birds (ZEPA). This protected wetland adds to the cultural and maritime themes, without suggesting a set itinerary.

When looking for a hotel in Sagunto, use your main travel interest as a first filter: historic buildings, archaeological finds and port facilities offer a contrast to coastal landscapes with dunes and valuable flora and fauna. Consider which of these themes matters most for your stay, and use it to guide the rest of your planning.
