Bufali offers three distinct ways to explore: the architecture and religious imagery in the town, the Camino del Cid route through Bufali, and birdwatching at a site outside the town. When planning your visit, it is worth keeping these different themes separate: the sights in the town are distinct from the approximately 16-kilometre walking route to Nevera de la Lloma Solaneta and a visit to the bird observatory by the Albaida River.
Church and religious imagery
The Church of Nuestra Señora de Loreto has a single nave with a barrel vault. This type of vault is an arched ceiling that extends lengthwise across the space. The church’s history includes several distinct phases: in 1535, it was a temple attached to the Church of Montaberner; in 1574, it became independent. It was rebuilt between 1885 and 1887, with furnishings inspired by Neoclassicism. The layout and furnishings therefore offer two different points of reference for understanding the church: the structure of the interior and its later design.
Another specific example of religious imagery can be found on Calle Virgen del Loreto. There stands a ceramic religious altarpiece dating from the late 18th century. Together with the church, this detail shows that religious art in Bufali cannot be described solely through the architecture of a single building.
The Camino del Cid and festivals
The Camino del Cid is a cultural route following in the footsteps of this historical figure, and it passes through Bufali. The route’s pilgrim passport can be stamped at the town hall. This gives the route a specific connection to the town: it passes through Bufali, while the stamping point is at the town hall. If you are travelling along the Camino del Cid, you can include this stop in your plans.
The festival traditions also combine religious associations with activities in the town. For the Loreto patron saint festival, residents traditionally prepare pericana and sangria; at midday, the whole town comes together for a shared meal. A 2025 festival description also mentions a flower-offering ceremony in which residents process through the town to the Church of Nuestra Señora de Loreto. A description of the San Antonio celebrations mentions a bonfire and the blessing of animals.
The patron saint festivals in honour of the Virgin Mary of Loreto and Christ of the Poor were celebrated in 2025 during the week of 15 August. The San Antonio celebrations took place in the last week of January that same year. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the dates for your chosen year.
Birdwatching and landscape
The Bufali Ornithological Station, also known as Fuente del Río, is located outside the town by the Albaida River. It is used for the study and observation of birds. There are picnic tables at the station in a natural setting. The landscape around Bufali is shaped by agriculture; birdwatching by the river and the agricultural surroundings are therefore two distinct aspects of the local landscape.
A longer walk from the town centre
A walking route from Bufali town centre leads to Nevera de la Lloma Solaneta and is approximately 16 kilometres long. The route follows tracks and paths. This approximate distance provides a guide for planning and can be considered a walk in its own right, separate from the sights in the town. As route conditions may vary, check them before setting out.
