Hiking trails, prehistoric traces and historic buildings reveal different sides of Barx. Numerous short hiking trails run through the municipality. They are joined by notable sites such as Cova de les Malladetes, the parish church of San Miguel Arcángel and the Nevera de Barx. Local specialties and festivals are also among the topics that can shape a stay.
Hiking trails and specific routes
The regional mountaineering federation lists the PR-CV 60 Barx–La Drova as a 10.60-kilometre circular route. It starts at C. Ausias March 45 in Barx. Along the way, the route passes through the Barranc de Manesa Flora Micro-Reserve and runs very close to the Nevera de Barx. The protected area and the historic structure are distinct points of interest along the route: one represents protected flora, the other Barx’s architectural heritage.
A shorter designated route is the PR-CV 60.1 Senda de la Marjaleta del Pi. The Ajuntament de Barx promotes this 3.50-kilometre route; Barx is its reference municipality. In a direct comparison of lengths, the PR-CV 60, at 10.60 kilometres, is about three times as long. These figures help put the scope of the two hiking options in perspective without presenting them as a single trail. The Ruta dels Monestirs GR-236 also passes through Barx; the municipality is one of the stops on this route.
The names of the trails and places offer different starting points for planning: a circular route, a shorter trail and another route that passes through the municipality. Those interested in nature will find a specifically named protected area on the PR-CV 60: the Barranc de Manesa Flora Micro-Reserve. Those wishing to include cultural heritage can consider the Nevera de Barx, located close to the route, as a separate point of interest.
Archaeology and architectural history
Cova de les Malladetes is an archaeologically significant site in the Mondúver mountain range in Barx. Traces of societies from the Upper Palaeolithic, Neolithic and Eneolithic periods have been discovered there. These three periods give the site a broad historical timeframe and make it an important destination for travellers interested in the region’s prehistory.
Finds from Cova de les Malladetes can be viewed at the Museu de Prehistòria de València or the Museu Arqueològic de Gandia. Both museums are places to see archaeological finds associated with the cave. The parish church of San Miguel Arcángel is another point of interest in the history of Barx itself: it dates from the 17th to the 19th century.
The Nevera de Barx dates back to the 18th century. It was once used to store snow that fell in winter so it could be used in summer. This function reflects a historic use directly linked to the changing seasons. The PR-CV 60 runs very close to the Nevera, connecting the structure with route planning without conflating it with the Flora Micro-Reserve.
The Riu-Rau in Barx also speak to earlier uses: these structures were once used to dry fruit. Plaça de la Constitució is considered the original centre of Barx. Together with the church, the Nevera and the Riu-Rau, these places offer different ways to explore the town’s history, each representing a distinct part of its cultural heritage.
Townscape, cuisine and festivals
The Mirador de la Visteta offers panoramic views. As another clearly identified place, the viewpoint adds a landscape perspective to the historic and archaeological themes. For visitors interested in both the townscape and hiking, Barx thus offers different focal points, without all the sights needing to belong to a single route.
Local culinary specialties include the sweet treats mones, pastissos and rossegons, as well as figatells and rosemary honey. The selection ranges from sweet specialties to other regional products. It offers a distinct way to experience the local cuisine, alongside the archaeological and historical themes that may take centre stage when choosing excursions.
Barx’s main festivals take place in the third week of August in honour of the Divina Pastora and Saint Michael. This annual festive period may be a factor when planning the timing of a visit. Whether you focus on hiking trails, prehistory, local history or cuisine, Barx offers specific and distinct points of interest for each of these areas.
